  1. Steinkuhler was a 4 star, 6th ranked OT in the country on 247 and a 5 star, 8th ranked OT on Rivals his senior year, and he switched because Bo placed a premium on DTs rather than OTs. It was an incredible disservice not only to the team, but to Baker in the long run.

  3. Does anyone know how Frost ran the Spring game at UCF? I am tired of Spring games being nothing more than exhibitions for the fans. I want to see 1s vs. 1s and 2s vs 2s in real, hard-hitting football. I want to see players fighting for position on the depth chart.

  4. I expect to be playing the final game of the season with a win taking us to the Big10 Championship. Anything less will be a disappointment from me. Now in this same thread we have gone to the "did you see the schedule?" Yep I see the schedule and frankly I give two $@&$ about the schedule. Go ahead and analyze every game before we get to it. I saw last years schedule as well, and we won 4 games, you see how that holds nothing to me.

  5. It was Baker's decision to switch. It has been said 10000000000000000000x on this board and by Baker himself. Why some keep blaming Bo on it is beyond me.

  6. Hopefully, the upcoming season will finally put to rest the never ending "talent' debate. It seems fairly well accepted that Frost is an excellent coach and therefore, if the talent is really there, we will see immediatel improvement in the team (atleast 9 wins and competitive in the losses we do suffer) and if the wins don't come, we'll know the talent is NOT there. I think it is highly likely we will see a much better conditioned, football 'fit' team that takes the field in 9 months. This alone should translate into a much better performance against the weakest opponents. We should be able to produce some 3 or 4 TD wins against those just by being in much better physical and mental condition. It seems hardly debatable that we have more talent than the bottom third of the schedule. The top third will be tough. The middle third should be competitive but if Frost and Company instill their schemes and the players are truly capable (i.e. talented enough), then those games should be wins (by a 7 to 14 pts) although they may be competitive going into the fourth quarter. Our conditioning should be a big factor late in games as well. No more watching our team 'wear down' and run out of gas when the crunch time hits.

  7. I think there is truth to that. Didn't Phillips come from USC? I don't remember anyone saying the Trojans weren't strong enough to compete. I dunno, it just seems like blaming the S&C coach is the low-hanging fruit when the team is playing poorly.

  10. I would agree with this and the comments from @Enhance Across the board there seemed to be a lack of accountability. I think the Defensive position coaches are much better than the results in the field. I think they were screwed by Diaco. Same with Philips. We had issues for sure, but he was the least of the problems.

  11. Here's a quote recently from Frost. Looks like he is confident he has the players in place now to run what he wants. Didn't listen to the above, so I can't comment to Walter's comments. 1. "I think we have good pieces on the team in Lincoln, and I think they probably had more talent on the team last year than what the record (4-8, 3-6 Big Ten) indicates, so we're excited to get to work with the guys who already are on the campus in Lincoln." That was Frost's response to the very first question he fielded from media last week regarding Nebraska's 2018 recruiting class. When a reporter asked for the coach's impressions of the class, Frost first expressed confidence in players already on campus before elaborating on incoming players. Talk about refreshing. I go back to former Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst's comments two days before the Music City Bowl in late 2016. He said the key for Mike Riley's program going forward was talent acquisition. That was a prevailing media and fan narrative during most of Riley's tenure — that he inherited a deficient roster and needed ample time to improve overall talent level. To Riley's credit, he never pushed the narrative, but Eichorst did. Common sense tells you it's dangerous for any program to allow a prominent part of its culture to be one that forever suggests the next batch of players will be the answer. The message Eichorst — who had far too heavy of a hand in Riley's program — sent to Nebraska players before the Music City Bowl essentially was, "You're not good enough, but we'll be much better in the future." I'm sure that inspired confidence throughout the roster. On the other hand, Frost's immediate approach ("I think we already have good pieces on the team in Lincoln") is more in line with the thinking of a high-level competitor who's bound and determined to win now — or at least compete! — as opposed to an excuse-laden culture that tends to place too much emphasis on the future while the program routinely gets its teeth kicked in on fall Saturdays. 13. It seems to be more the combination of bellies and tiny arms. But it's not normal to see huge bulging bicep muscles when arms are hanging at the sides. Here's a photo of the Alabama offensive line: This is more to do with our OL being bad, and people looking for reasons why it's bad. Maybe the workouts can improve, but I think it's more to do with coaching

  14. Saw it today. Really wanted to like it. Really didn't. The main thing I took away from this is that, with the main arc movies, they're going to play it safe and build on rip off the original movies. It's a formula they know works, they regurgitate the old scenes packaged in a new way, and they get their $4.1 billion dollars back. Safe. But awful if you're looking to watch a great new movie. I'm going to miss some of the repeats, but here's a partial list. We've Seen This Before The Empire - the thing that needed explaining the most in this whole new trilogy is What Happened To The New Republic?!?!? Instead, we just have to accept that the Republic, which had stood for thousands of years, is suddenly out AGAIN after reestablishing itself from the couple-three decade reign of the Emperor. We absolutely needed a brief scene explaining how that coalition of systems that grew so big they overthrew the Empire - setting off celebrations around the galaxy - became so impotent so fast that the Empire essentially reestablished itself in... what? A few years? But where did they get the funds to build a huge new fleet, how did they train all those Stormtroopers, how do they have a functional government, how isn't the entire galaxy in turmoil or fighting against them? The tiny Rebel Resistance fleet... where did the galaxy-wide support go, and how did it go so fast? This is the least believable part of this whole thing, and that's not even including all the science questions you have to just ignore. Hoth - AT-ATs, underpowered but plucky "rebel" ships, a fortress surrounded by snow salt with a giant main gate. Trenches & turrets set up not in any strategic position but right out front. It's like a kid building a fort in the loose earth in the backyard for his green army men. Zero sophistication, just Here Are Good Guys Opposing Bad Guys. Blend that with the Falcon coming to save the day a la the trench run in Star Wars. Handcuffs - The whole Kylo takes Rey to see the Emperor Snoke scene was lifted from ROTJ. Some of the lines were lifted wholesale, the Emperor Snoke removing the handcuffs, the battle in the Throne Room, the conversation about conflict in you bap bap bap. The Bacta Tank - Finn waking up in the medical chamber, full of goop from his healing gizmo. Dagobah - Luke Rey travels to a faraway planet where an old Jedi Master is hiding and, after some coercion, convinces the Master to provide training. There's even an X-Wing sunken in the water and a giant water dwelling creature broaching in front of us. The training is again entirely enigmatic (reach out with your feelings) and, especially in Rey's case, almost nonexistent. There's some physical training (but condescendingly? not nearly to the same extent as Luke's) and there's the emotional pull of the Dark Side and the cave under the tree pit by the sea where we see... Luke's Face in Vader's Helmet - Luke goes into the tree cave where he swipes Vader's mask off only to reveal his face. Rey thinks she's going to get answers, too, only to see... her own face. Bleh. I could go on and on. The worst thing is, there is NO NEED to recycle these plot lines, at all. There are a million great stories they could tell with this universe, so why (other than it's a guaranteed buck) do they rehash this stuff? And why don't fans hold them accountable for it? Too much gushing over this movie, not enough people asking why. Audiences need to be critical of the movies they watch or they're going to get crap movies. If this movie wasn't in the Star Wars line, if it was its own stand-alone story like Bladerunner or 2001: A Space Odyssey, it would be laughed out of the theater. SO MANY PLOT HOLES. So much dumbness. Why did Laura Dern wait for a dozen of those transports to be destroyed before doing something? Fire up your guns, have the ship's autopilot help out. Cheap ploy to create drama. Why didn't the Empire put the pedal to the metal and catch up to the fleeing Rebel cruiser? Or, if it was faster, why didn't they just continue to pull away? That whole space chase was dumb. How do you sneak ships off that cruiser for side missions or escapes and the Empire can't see them? We have, today, an Earth-made telescope that can detect something as weak as a home WiFi signal from a million miles away. Literally - I'm not making that up. Why would we believe a space-based culture wouldn't/couldn't see those ships and blast them? What in the world was that whole casino planet thing? It seemed nothing more than a way to introduce Benicio Del Toro's character, and produce some love plot between Finn & Rose, and to introduce some sympathetic and lovable horsedogcats and SUPER DUPER cute slave kids with clean faces and huge, cutesy eyes (and a force wielder). Leia's space sojourn. That whole thing was corny as hell, should have resulted in her death so Carrie Fisher could have a been written out of the show, and we'd have closure. A human can't survive in space that long. And when she started Force-floating back to the ship, why didn't her gown flutter? I know the science is wonky in the Star Wars universe, but surely we're not supposed to believe inertia doesn't exist. Right? Why were the bombers dropping bombs via some manual remote control? That was asinine. Again. Bleh. I could go on and on. Like this movie went on and on. This is likely the last of these movies I see in a theater. They've lost me. If this is what they're going to produce from now on, I guess I'll just let the present die & cherish my childhood memories from the past.

  15. Good article IMHO about Frost's vision to return NU to prominence. A definite nod to the past with an eye to the future. Talks about the culture, developing the talent and outworking teams.... “The formula at a lot of places is to recruit five stars and throw them on the field and hope you out-recruited everybody. The formula at Nebraska is going to be hard work and developing players better than everybody else,” he said. “Over and over I see three-star kids that end up being better players in college than kids that were hyped up and five-star recruits. We’re going to get our share of players, and our mission is to do better with them once they hit campus.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/12/21/scott-frosts-blueprint-nebraska-recruit-smart-develop-players-no-short-cuts/974244001/ I think we are in good hands.....

  17. It's on the coach ultimately to field the best players at their best position to field the best possible team to compete and win. Coaches run the team not players. That is a cop out to say the kid calls the shots. That sounds like a Riley run program

  18. If I'd answered this 2 years ago, maintaining our Democracy would have been way down the list. Gerrymandering has been very important for a long time but other than that I took our Democracy for granted. Now I'd put it up there at or near the top. Not a day goes by when Trump doesn't try to weaken it, and the GOP is doing nothing to stop him. We'll be lucky if it exists 3-7 years from now. Make Gerrymandering illegal. No district shape should have more than 6 sides, unless it borders something natural, like a winding river or a lake. Others: Scientific integrity. Politicians should not be making science decisions, nor censoring scientific findings they don't like. This is another thing I shouldn't have to ask for. This shouldn't be a partisan issue but it is. Same goes for every damn agency Trump has put a moron in charge of, or someone who wants to destroy that agency. Related to the above - protect the environment Raise taxes on the top 5%, and don't lower taxes on the rest. At the same time, get rid of all subsidies that go to the wealthy Legalize marijuana

  19. I think this team isn't nearly as bad, or deficient in "talent" as some believe. I am assuming that starting now the players buy-in and effort will be much improved. For one, I sincerely doubt that Frost and these new coaches will be as soft as on the players as the previous staff was. Second, if it is true that "the best player plays" then you'll see much better participation in practice. And better participation and effort in practice will by default yield to better outcomes in games.

  20. I get that but it doesn't take "time and patience" to beat NW, IL, Minny, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Iowa...It doesn't take time and patience to win your crappy non-conference games. The 9 wins (our patience) are there...the rest of it...beating Wisconsin or Michigan or OSU or PSU or MSU (I don't think much of them actually) that is where there might need to be some time.

  22. I agree with the above ref the hardest we've worked, best shape etc.....One difference is Frost. He doesn't appear to be a sunshine pumper. he knows what it takes to win and what will make teams lose. Whatever comes out of winter conditioning, spring, fall etc will be from the press. I imagine Frost and Co might tamp down on the "optimism" coming out of camp....... A few quotes that shows Frost is a level headed, no nonsense kind of coach...... 2. "This signing day gets over-hyped, and I'm never going to be the one that does the overhyping." "You're not going to see our staff jumping around in the coaching staff room every time we get a NLI (national letter of intent). I just don't think that's honest." http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/sipple/steven-m-sipple-frost-s-comments-suggest-sorely-needed-style/article_1e9bc36e-e845-5c35-9190-89b280473f3b.amp.html

  23. All, In an attempt to crack down one some inappropriate terms here, please read: Just as referring to people as 'snowflakes' and 'libtards' often leads to issues on this board, referring to Trump supporters as 'Trumpanzees' is unacceptable. It doesn't matter if it's a joke or not since, inevitably, we have people all walks of life and political affiliations here. That type of rhetoric can be a turnoff and cause issues. Thanks!

  24. Trump unquestionably desires it. Among the populace, I think there's a healthy strain of authoritarian wishes -- maybe it's our culture, maybe it's humanity generally. But it's a smaller number that's hardcore, probably, versus people who are just OK with it or would allow it. Which is why I think it's important to think of it as the priority, or we'll find ways to justify measures of support, accommodation, or even unwitting aid.

  26. Although I have no proof to back this up, I think Phillipp is getting far too much flak (from some corners of the fan base) for a problem he didn't have complete control over. There were rumors that some players were getting preferential treatment from coaches/coordinators in order to avoid workouts. It's also very possible the team suffered from an overall lack of a competitiveness. I think one thing we can say with relative certainty is Nebraska had some culture issues under Riley.

  27. “Sometimes you have to go into a cave and then dig your way out” recent comment by a former Husker after he watched the team lift. Too many high fives, too much jubilation in his mind. The weight room is where you get BROKEN. Broken to pieces and either rise up and get your ass back in there for the next rep, the next set, the next day or GTFO. Turn off the AC, turn down the lights, blast some f’ing Metallica, rip your palms bloody, tear off your shirt, spit on the ground, bang the bars against the rack, and then look at who is left standing. Those men are who you trust when the s#!t is on the line. Ignite the fuse that is HUSKER POWER

  31. That’s why college coaches should be recruiting as many DT’s as possbile. So many of them flame out to be nothing, that you can’t bring in too many. Which makes it even more maddening that the prior staff wasn’t interested in Bryson Williams. That was a kid who lives 5-10 miles from campus, and the old staff couldn’t find room for him to get an offer.

  40. I bought my tickets for this movie a month ago. I have a room full of Star Wars memorabilia.I haven't lost interest in anything. What I don't have is an appreciation of a media company that owns a massive chunk of Hollywood cashing in on my fandom by making a very bad movie simply because they can. I liked Rogue One because it was a good movie. TFA and TLJ are not good movies. I am analyzing a movie, nothing more. Please do the same and stop attempting to diagnose the level of my fandom. You don't know me and this isn't the place to make a personal assumption about me because I like or don't like a movie.

  41. Saw it, loved it. Will share some brief overall thoughts Some notable pros: - Rey and Kylo's character arcs. Their force connection and the ups/downs of their emotions related to one another are fascinating. - The film's tone and direction. TFA rehashed many themes we're familiar with while TLJ went in some fairly new directions. Sure, we witnessed some obvious analogies (traveling to a distant planet for Jedi training, a massive battle against AT-AT's on a remote planet) but they were tweaked enough to where they didn't feel like something we'd felt before. - The new uses of the force. Seeing these were incredible. Kylo/Rey's connection, Luke's force projections, Yoda calling down a lightning storm... - Luke's tormented mind about what happened and how it happened. My only disappointment here is that we're not going to see the physical form of Luke (and his powers) again but likely a force ghost version - The whole battle in Snoke's throne room was epic - Seeing THE REAL Yoda Some notable cons: - Finn. Echoing some others' thoughts here, but it's almost like they had no idea what to do with him in this movie. (as a part B... the whole casino sub plot and Benicio del Toro stuff was underwhelming). This ended up hurting the movie in more than one way and is really my biggest gripe by far - Leia force pulling herself back to the ship felt outlandish, even as a Force power - Phasma went the way of Boba Fett - interesting and under-utilized - any insight into Snoke

  42. I'm going to mirror Landlord a bit here. The good: -Snoke was fantastic, so well done. Not a sith but powerful! Lightsaber unnecessary because he is so powerful and all knowing. Then, he dies in an amazing scene. Seriously did not see that coming, I really expected him to like regenerate or something. But no, just flopped over in two pieces. The fact he was nobody actually made it better, I'm glad he wasn't Plagueis, Sifo Deus or Gallus Rax. His throne room was awesome, the lightsaber battle was also slick as hell. -Daisy Ridley, really nailed the vunerable lost soul with raw potential thing. Love her, can't wait to see her come full circle. -Adam Driver, homerun. LOVE that he is being handed the reigns to be the big bad after all the speculation of his conflicted position. Not even Vader got to be the true big bad, not once. Kylo Ren is a great character. -Chewbacca was about perfect, not too much but just enough. -Leia really got to shine in her swan song. -Crait was an awesome planet and visually it was just beyond fascinating. -Holdo and the suicide lightspeed shot through the destroyer was an absolute achievement. Beautiful. In retrospect it's almost a shame they didn't have Leia go down with the ship and have Holdo take her place as General. Hindsight 20/20 unfortunately. That and Laura Dern was terrific, would have liked to see her in the next. -FINALLY, a freaking Star Wars movie remembered what Yoda is SUPPOSED to look like! Seriously! -Poe is such a fun character, funny but courageous and all that jazz. -Luke force projection battle was too good. Man Mark Hamill still had it, how cool to see that after all this time. And was it not just freaking perfect to have him chuck the lightsaber over his shoulder?!!?! 2 year wait after TFA and he just goes "Meh...junk. leave my planet". Force Ghost Luke is going to be bone chillingly cool to see in 2 years. Damn, Luke was awesome! He was still Luke but like more badass than ever! The bad: -2 movies, and it is BEYOND evident that Captain Phasma was merely a way to sell a chrome stormtrooper action figure. What a complete waste. You could have random stormtrooper #7 with a different colored shoulder pad to indicate rank fill the role in either movie and literally nothing would be different. -John Boyega as Finn is good, don't get me wrong. But they clearly had no clue what to do with him in this movie. -Benicio Del Toro, unecessary. -The whole Casino subplot could have been cut and made the runtime shorter and nobody would complain. Too bad, it could have been a lot better. Finn and Rose could have simply infiltrated the First Order ship without the detour, would have been way more interesting to watch an extended infiltration mission instead of lollygagging around with the race horses etc. Oh well. -We have all wanted to see Leia do force stuff.......but that was straight out of a Stanley Kubrick idea journal. Like that took me out of it honestly. Not a fan of that scene, probably my biggest gripe since the decision to insert Hayden into ROTJ. -Still no Knights of Ren, after all the waiting. I'm sure I'll think of more, that was a lot to digest. SO much happened but almost nothing happened, heard it said that way yesterday and it rings so true. I want to see it again to truly rank it, but it's towards the top.

  43. So, just got back from the film. Here's my thoughts (spoilers): Overall, I mean, I loved it. It definitely has some problems, some big questions marks as far as actual storytelling and some big question marks as far as speculation/rumors/expectations that were built by the hype, but it also has some amazing moments - imo, some of the best moments ever in the Star Wars mythology. The good: • The cinematography. Across the board, the film was beautiful. Rogue One stepped up the game of Star Wars cinematography in a big way, and Ep VIII might have raised the bar even higher. • They subverted expectations and stayed away from a lot of tropes, mainly regarding the overly simplistic "good vs evil" narrative of SW, and the idea that you have to be of a certain bloodline or destined as a "chosen one" to be a great hero • The big moments. Warping through the First Order ships was literally jaw-dropping. So was Kylo and Rey's teamup lightsaber battle. So was Luke's force projection standoff with Kylo. So many awesome pieces at play. • The chemistry between all the main cog characters is great. Even when some of them suffer from poor writing, they all shine with tons of personality. In addition to the actors, even with the confusing plot developments, a lot of these characters are brimming with flaws and complexity • I thought the style and amount of humor was on point and awesome. In a lot of ways, this movie is very self-aware. The bad: • The whole Finn/Rose subplot was almost entirely literally pointless. We spent a ton of time in that, and it didn't actually impact the plot at all? The only lasting effects are introducing Benecio Del Toro's character (is he important? I guess we'll see), killing off Phasma (who once again was overhyped and not delivered upon), and showing us a vague ending with a kid having hope and being able to force pull a broom toward his hand. Oh, and I guess them falling in love. But honestly - that subplot was the worst part of the entire movie. • I was really anticipating a dive into the mythos of the Force, and for Luke to actually give us some exposition on true balance, or why the Jedi were misguided, or something. Instead it mostly just boiled down to Luke feeling guilty and angry and the burden of being the last Jedi. • Still no backstory whatsoever for Snoke. I love the way they killed him off and I thought the character was really engaging, but if you don't establish him, I'm not going to be cheering too hard when he's dead. • Leia's force-pull and being totally fine floating in space was.... odd. Man, there is a lot to unpack in this film. I feel like I typed out a ton and still didn't even reference half the things I was thinking through. All in all, loved it, even with it's flaws.
