  1. Oh. I had forgotten it's colder in Nebraska sometimes than it is in Florida. Thank goodness there's another person to remind me.

  3. Yep. Few more years and we would have been able to complete a screen pass. Just didn't have enough time to get it done.

  6. The university has pissed away opportunities to promote themselves positively in recent years, particularly the athletic department. I'm personally familiar with one such relationship they couldn't effectively negotiate because they wanted to provide less of their product for more money. They then tried to come crawling back months later to see if some resolution could be found and the other part declined to entertain them. This was pre-Moos. Ultimately, Dirk is a reporter. It's not his job to shed the university in a positive light or be overly negative. IMO, I think he does sometimes go a bit too far but there's an audience for what he writes, and then there are other times he does incredible work.

  7. Not quoting that whole post from my phone. No, Nebraska is not in the middle of the division in talent. The recruiting rankings aren't perfect but they aren't far off. I believe we've had the best recruiting rank every single year in our division. At worst we're in 2nd. We just haven't had coaches who use it correctly and coach it to be better.

  8. well, the team has reached the half-way point of the season. they are 2-4 in Big 10 play, 14-14 overall, and the potential for regional play is essentially out the window. so much for the pre season pick of finishing #2 in the Big 10. I think we all started to think this season would go down hill when they lost at home to Northern Colorado and Northwestern State. anyway, one of the bright spots about this season has been the play of Scott Schreiber. Dude knew what he was doing when he came back for his senior season. Scott is hitting 0.389 and has 9 HRs already. with the remaining schedule, it is not a stretch to think he could hit 0.400 for the season. Scott's abilities at the plate are about the only thing that keeps me tuning into the games this year.

  12. There's only one problem with your "there's good and bad on both sides" assertion. In the past 10 years the Republicans have made it abundantly clear they will not compromise with Democrats for the betterment of the nation. From The Grand Bargain, to immigration, to healthcare, to just this year when Schumer would have funded the wall in exchange for making DACA recipients legal citizens. One party pretty much initiated the scuttling of negotiations when they didn't get exactly what they wanted. Sure people like Sasse and Flake talk a tough game against Trump, but they are either not running for office again, or their tough talk doesn't match their actions.

  15. This is the "scheme theme" month for The Solid Verbal, and they had the excellent Chris B Brown on to talk shop. Chris is a lawyer by day, and X's and O's nerd by night. He has his own site (smartfootball.com) and has written a couple really good books that talk about random football scheme stuff in common terms. I could read and listen to him all day. Anyway, on this episode, they talked about playcalling methods, terminology and tempo. And Chris gushed over Scott Frost... alot. Specifically the way he crafts his offense, calls plays, and uses tempo. https://www.solidverbal.com/2018/03/20/chris-b-brown-football-communication/ Check it out.

  16. This is a great topic, worth a listen. A huge part of what it means to define a system. Even though he didn't go into it because it's somewhat tangential, this topic is one reason why I really like how Frost allocates responsibility amongst the offensive staff. The past several Nebraska offensive coordinators, and many other schools, have the offensive coordinator be the QB coach, and be the play caller. That's really three jobs when you think about it; coordinating the entire offense, handling the QB, and calling the play. When the offensive coordinator is in the booth removed from these other roles, he can watch the game and make suggestions. He isn't thinking about what to tell the QB between series or figuring out the next play call. He can focus on how to fix the problem of that unblockable 3 tech. Humans aren't very good at multi-tasking. It's very hard for one person to macro level strategize, relay that information to other people with the detail level of a play call, and solve problems as they happen. Even though the offensive coordinator doesn't get the credit he should in this system, because most everyone does it a different way, it is in my mind a better way. You have the advantage of the play caller on the field where he can better communicate, but the coordinator with the vantage in the booth.

  17. Fisher quote from McKewon's article: "Whether they were coached like that or they decided to play like that, I don't know, but on film they played a little soft." Might be just a bit of an understatement... Tempted to switch my vote to Fisher. He has the right attitude to change the DB room to get some hitters in there. I like this whole coaching staff though, so it's hard to pick just one.

You can always tell when a news reporter/anchor doesn’t know a thing about the sports story they are covering. rant off. Hog-Molly away.

  22. You honestly can’t say there is no difference between being down 35 points at half in a home game vs being down 6 with your offense having a chance to win the game in the final minute, even if both end in a loss.

  24. I don't get it. More miles per gallon helps the consumer, as long as they're not paying an arm and a leg for it with the car purchase. Forcing the companies to outdo each other on the miles per gallon also helps the consumer. Removing these requirements only helps the car companies who aren't good at that. So, as usual, Trump isn't for the little guy. If Obama was for it, he's against it. If Obama was against it, he's for it. He's a simple, small-brained man.

  25. Simple changes in culture can take a team a long ways. Look no further than Brohm at Purdue for an example. 7 wins in his first year, good for 3rd place in the west, and had several close losses that nearly went their way. (Contrast that with last place the year before) . Just toughening that team up was good for a 5 win swing. I would be thrilled if we could get a 5 game swing. May even build a statue. EDIT: yeah, i know there was more to their improvement than just toughening up, but hopefully my point was still made.

  27. The bolded is simply not true. The timing of it, that is. There was a meeting immediately after Obama was elected the first time that they were going to oppose everything, regardless of what it was. That's why the Democrats had no bipartisan support. Also, there were compromises in the ACA with the GOP which made it worse than what it would have been.

  32. It's completely illogical to me to have the same attitude about a 1 point loss in a well played, well coached game to a good team than a 40 point loss to a bad team that we weren't in from the beginning. I hate losing no matter what. In both situations, I would be very disappointed and not content. But, the attitude about where the program is and the leadership of the program and players would be very different. As for Wisconsin, of course I wish Nebraska would be in the position they are having the divisional success. But, that doesn't mean I would then be perfectly content not dream of them taking the next step and knocking off OSU as the top dog in the conference. Right now, if I were given the choice, I would obviously prefer Nebraska to be in OSU's position. But...you know what???? If Nebraska were in OSU's position, I still wouldn't be perfectly content because there is always room for improvement. OSU hasn't had Alabama's level of success on the national stage. In anything, when you have success, you want more and bigger success. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy the steps along the way and appreciate the team.

  33. Can you believe I once put “hog-molly” in a script when I worked at a tv station, and the anchor refused to say it because it was “far too offensive”? Granted this was the same anchor who said I couldn’t say “finds a man in the flats” because “nobody knows what that means”. Translation: they didn’t know what it means.

  35. In what way? Wisconsin has lost their last 6, and 9 of their last 10.

  36. Exactly my point. Nebraska has "out-recruited" every team in the Big 10 West by a wide margin and yet they've been getting trounced by Wisconsin and Iowa. They've also been beaten regularly by teams like Northwestern and Minnesota. Not to mention the absolutely embarrassing 55 points Purdue put on us in Riley's first year. Note I am not saying recruiting isn't important. I am also not saying Nebraska shouldn't go after the best possible players. What I am saying is that recruiting great players is only the starting point. What our coaches do with these players, how they take to the coaching, their commitment to working/getting better, coaching continuity, staying relatively injury free--all these factors combine to give us a perception of "talent" level. My over-arching point is: Nebraska has recruited great players all along. We've lacked great coaching, player development, and individual player "want" for several seasons. The net result is the tired, low-hanging fruit of the we have no (or little) talent and can't compete mantra-and it's a load of malarky.

  37. I didn't vote because I can't pick just one. Heck 4 or 5 of them pop off the page as being my favorites at this point. Held, Walters, Verduzco, Chinander, Dawson.....all of them are serious upgrades from what we had.

  40. Pelini generally recruited at about the same rank as his teams ended up in the polls. Riley's results were worse than his recruiting ranks. So far Frost has shown that he can achieve much better on field results than his recruiting ranks - and going off his first year of recruiting, he'll recruit just as well or better than Pelini/Riley. If he can recruit in the top 25 I think we'll see top 15 seasons, and maybe have a really great season occasionally.

  41. I don't subscribe, but I did my own research: Pitchers on roster that have not had arm injuries: (8 total, 3 of which are true freshmen) Andrew Abrahamowicz - Fr. (14 IP) Luis Alvarado - Sr. (49 IP) Byron Hood - Rs Jr. (21 IP) Max Schreiber - Fr. (5.1 IP) Mitch Steinhoff - Jr. (8.1 IP) Matt Waldron - Jr. (152.1 IP) Keegan Watson - Fr. (5.1 IP) Mike Waldron - Jr. (18.2 IP) - listed as utility player on roster Pitchers on roster that have had arm injuries: (11 total, 1 of which occurred before transferring to Nebraska) Connor Curry - Rs Fr. Reece Eddins - Jr. Zack Engelken - Jr. Nate Fisher - Jr. Ethan Frazier - Jr. Jake Hohensee - Sr. Chad Luensmann - Jr. Jake McSteen - Jr. Robbie Palkert - Jr. Paul Tillotson - Rs Fr. Matt Warren - Sr. - injury occurred while at Creighton So 10 of 18 roster pitchers have had some sort of arm/shoulder injury while at Nebraska, which is 56%. 10 of 15 pitchers that have been in the program for at least a year have had an arm injury, which is 67%. Of the pitchers who have not had an arm injury, only Matt Waldron (152.1 IP) has thrown more than 50 innings. Only 2 have thrown over 22 innings. I know arm injuries seem to be more common in baseball these days, but this is getting to ridiculous levels. At some point you have to stop thinking it's bad luck and you have to start looking at your practice, workload, and strength & conditioning practices. Of course it's going to be hard for Erstad to have much success with these types of numbers, but a lot of the blame has to be placed on him and his staff. Edit: Added Mike Waldron - he's listed as a utility player, but he has pitched some Edit: Took Matt Warren out of the numbers as his injury occurred while at Creighton

  42. I love a good Dirk bash as much as the next person. That being said, he's far and away the best columnist the OWH (and probably the state) has. His long form pieces and non Husker football related stuff is usually pretty excellent. His article about the Kansas basketball friends with one of them dying of cancer was gut wrenching, thought provoking and beautiful.
