Mike Riley isn't our coach anymore

Just got back home from a long weekend in your great town of Lincoln. The fans, ambiance, knowledge, stadium were/was incredible. Things I learned were: Misty's cooks a GREAT STEAK; Single Barrel was a GREAT TAILGATE; Railway district (?) and Haymarket were just fun and festive on Friday night, Saturday was a bit slower, understandably; Stadium experience (other than hot as blazes - this from a guy that lives on the gulf coast in Florida) was phenomenal; KC Argosy Casino are thieves - they took all my money! Your patience will be well worth it when Frost gets the guys he needs to run what he wants to run. Both teams have some discipline problems they need to shore up. No doubt our Special Teams were better - by far and our team speed showed up when running guys down from behind. Koening (Troy DC) did a great job combating your size and strength on the O line and we got great pressure on your QB; Our offense was just good enough on that last drive to make some great plays (our speed again) and turnovers are killers, and we just had less than you! Great time folks - really enjoyed it. I hope with all my heart that your team gets some things righted internally and Martinez gets healthy and your guys walk into the Big House and take care of business. Good luck the rest of this season and beyond. Go Troy - Cry HAVOC and slip the dogs of war!

Through two games we have 10 sacks. Gifford, Akinmalodun, and Khalil Davis all rank in conferences top 10 currently for sack totals and they've played one less game than most everyone else in the top ten.

We are 3 2 games into his tenure, the starter got injured, the backup transfered, the 3rd string became backup and his transfer isn't eligible. What exactly would you like him to do? 24/7 online stream of A Mart to ease your conscious?

This is the point that strikes me most clearly about bad takes from the first two games we have played. In my (oh so humble) opinion, we did not lose the first two games because of "buy-in", "culture", strength and conditioning, lack of talent, or bad habits. We didn't lose last Saturday because we didn't have Adrian Martinez. We are 0-2, because we were simply out-coached, and not as well prepared as the teams we faced. We are losing the turnover margin, and both Martinez and many of the running backs continue to run with the ball away from their body (this comes down to coaching). Several 4th and short play-calls, have failed because for some reason Scott Frost refuses to run the most efficient short yardage play: the QB sneak under center. His clock management has been very questionable, when we were behind late to Troy he bleeds the clock with plays for an almost 7 minute drive, but when we are ahead against Colorado we can barely run off a minute at all. You could go on and on. We finally have a 'SYSTEM' to recruit to, to develop players in, and to execute with. That system also includes a S&C program that will pay dividends. Watching some of Washington's runs has me really excited for what he'll do the next few years. He's had most of the bigger plays turned in by our RBs this year. That got me wondering - is there a correlation between possessions that we've scored on and which RB was getting the touches that drive. Frost generally plays on RB for the entire possession - or at least has so far this year. There have been a few times when it changes mid-drive for one reason or another but not all that often. So I went through our scoring drives through two games and categorized them by which RB(s) got a touch on that possession. Here's what I found: Colorado 1st Quarter - 8 plays, 75 yards, TD - Washington 3 runs for 14 yards; Oz 1 run for 7 yards 2nd Quarter - 7 plays, 52 yards, TD - Oz 5 rushes, 26 yards, TD 2nd Quarter - 8 plays, 79 yards, TD - Bell 1 run for 45 yards; Oz 4 touches for 13 yards 3rd Quarter - 6 plays, 80 yards, TD - Oz 2 touches for 17 yards Troy 2nd Quarter - 5 plays, 65 yards, TD - Washington 3 touches for 23 yards 3rd Quarter - 3 plays, 2 yards, FG - Oz 2 rushes, 2 yards 3rd Quarter - 10 plays, 48 yards, FG - Washington 6 touches, 37 yards 4th Quarter - 11 plays, 75 yards, TD - Washington 4 touches, 22 yards; Oz 3 touches, 16 yards Observations: Bell has only touched the ball on one scoring drive - when he had the 45 yard run; interesting since he's had the most carries so far this year. We've only had that one drive where a big play from a RB led to a score - probably part of the offensive issues so far Oz was in for all four scoring drives against Colorado, even though he had a modest 5.2 yards per touch The first FG against Troy shouldn't really count since we only got two yards on the "drive" Washington carried the bulk of the load on the other scoring drives against Troy, 6.3 yards per touch on those drives Pretty small sample size and nothing really conclusive but it might be interesting to watch going forward.

In hindsight, yes. However, at the time, not knowing that we would be getting Frost, I’d have been really excited. Of course, Larry the Memorial Stadium janitor replacing Mike Riley would’ve been somewhat exciting too . But to be clear, I am currently much happier with Frost than I would be with Saban.

I have upset friends and family with comments that I have made about the current Husker team. I find myself extremely disappointed with the current product I see on the field in the last two games. There are glimpses of good things, but many painful memories of Husker disasters of the past have also showed up in the games. With the comments of Tanner Farmer, I guess the transition has not been as smooth as we would have hoped. Bad habits are hard to break. That being said, I am extremely confident in the process. Unlike before where I felt I had to talk myself into believing the process, I no longer feel that way. I trust the hands that this program is in and I feel we will at least get back to at least the shadow of the teams of the 90’s. It may just take some time. I have always been supportive of the football teams in the past. I just think now we are in the right hands. I see the anguish on Coach Frost’s face. I feel he will keep this thing going in the right direction. It just hasn’t happened yet….

Not sure if I’ve ever seen someone put so many words into someone else’s mouth. Unless I missed it, he didn’t say anything close to what you’re claiming.

Remember, I responded to someone talking about Frost's handling of the QBs. I get that you don't want to look at the past but the past is what is screwing over Frost right now. All three of the guys you listed, plus not recruiting a QB one year and the QBs in the 2014 class, didn't pan out at Nebraska. I have to believe that Frost would adapt his offense if one of them were here and thrown into the starting spot. He is too good of a coach to not adjust his system to his personnel.

Troy pinned their ears back and ran through and around our OL. Bunch is unfortunately not a fit for this offense and when he couldn’t juke the defender in the backfield and took a big sack on the first drive, that was all Troy’s DC needed to know to figure out an attack to our QB run game and simplify our offense. This is nothing against the kid, but guys and gals, we had open scholarships and he didn’t receive one in a QBs room with just 3 scholarship QBs - prior to a transfer out - that included a transfer-in who has to sit out. Unfortunately, the lack of buy-in is when players don’t dig deeper when served adversity. That takes playing for keeps to learn who steps up and who bows out, and how they respond to each other after addressing the issue. The leadership at the helm is strong, just tough when this dose of medicine isn’t the bubble gum flavored kind.

I rewatched the game today. One thing i noticed was that our blocking from the tight end was horrible on a number of plays and directly lead to the play being blown up. Our O line played bad. But, the tightends were to blame sometimes too. PS....there were also sometimes on zone reads where the QB should have kept the ball and it lead to an easy defensive play that wasn’t the O line’s fault. In short....we had major issues through our the offense.

As the subject says, I'm HoustonHusker's son and long time lurker on this board. Dad would be as excited as anyone for the return of Frost and the change in direction from the past 15 years. It's good to finally be a member here. I wanted to share some of my observations as I've seen what both excellent (1995 being the best) and really poor (too many seasons too recently) look like. Reminder - In '96 Frost led an anemic Cornhusker offense to a whopping 0 points in the 2nd game. I remember how upset people were afterwards. Greatness can take a little time. Big Picture: - Despite being 0-2, I'm really excited for the future. Game 1 against CU taught me strides were made in a short time (Troy was a bit of a regression from game 1), but it will take a while to undue the cultural and brand damage of the last dozen+ years. Nothing made me more upset than Riley's nonchalance in losing....then hearing they weren't lifting etc validates him needing to be gone. - Frost is the best chance we have to return as a program. I'm not saying he's the only coach that could do it, but he's far-and-away the best. He knows winning football as a player and coach. He knows what it takes to make this program return to prominence. I have full confidence we'll get there, though I thought we'd look a little better than we do right now. Still a lot to be hopeful for... - I understand some of the frustration, but the full blown "Frost train is derailed" comments are absurd. Let's give this some time. I see repeats of past issues with a new staff (mistakes, lack of focus), but Frost is changing an entire culture of defeatism. I choose to support the longer term than the myopic emotional frustrations of the short term. This Team (Good and Bad mix): - Last Saturday we seemed less fiery and attacking on defense than against CU. This isn't so much scheme as demeanor. Not sure what that was. We are not good enough to not be on fire for every snap; a mix of controlled emotion, confidence, and desperation (difficult to describe what I mean here but the yield is unapologetic energy every snap, Saturdays and in between). - Offensively, we obviously could expect a diluted gameplay, or a pivot, for Troy. Bunch is not Martinez. I'd rather have Martinez healthy than be 1-1 right now if his health was at risk. Adrian will be a stud for us - Mo Barry is a beast. He's not Terrell Farley or Lavonte disruptive, yet, but I love his hustle and mentality - Mo Washington is another good one. He's separated himself from the pack a bit. I thought Ozigbo took a step back today. He looks like the #3 to me right now. I hope that fact fires him up - Tyjon and Spielman seem slower than I thought. I'm watching playmakers in the SEC, remembering those Oregon teams, and these two don't seem very close to those athletes. I've adjusted expectations for both... - Speaking of slower, our tempo is slower than those other teams. Watching a video of UCF's '17 highlights, I'm excited to see the NU version of that. - Lamar Jackson seems in over his head. He gets beat very easily. At some point you can coach and teach, but players have to execute. They either have the awareness and gifting to do so, or they do not - I've never been more concerned about the kicking game as I am for this team - Our perimeter blocking needs a complete revamp. I see too many bad angles, out-hustles, and poor execution which should allow runners a crease to push up field. Our option plays have looked really bad especially. - I'm a bit surprised a staff from a 13-0 team speaks so highly of the Monday - Fri product but these Saturdays have been a little underwhelming. I can see an average coach saying "We look good." then losing, but I cannot put my finger on the disconnect. Frost and co. know what winning ball looks like. Frost knows athletes, speed, schemes, aggression. I don't see how the pressers and feelings for this team translate to the Saturday product, yet. To restate, I'm very excited for the future. The above observations are not meant to be pessimistic, but it does show me this ship will take some time to turn. There is no better man at the helm to do it, and I encourage fans to look at the mid and long game and not just focus on a disappointing (with some flashes of really good) start. I'd rather be 0-2 with Frost than 2-0 with Riley and two blowout wins. No question. Sorry for the wall of text. Looking forward to experiencing greatness with you all soon.

"Buy in" is not the reason Nebraska is 0-2. Early turnovers and drive killing penalties that lead to 0-14 and 0-17 starts are the reason this team is 0-2. Despite what some people think, this team is not talented nor experienced enough to overcome starts like that against anybody in Div. I.

It matters 100%. The Team. The Team. The Team. Not... "The ~45 guys who played on Saturday" Edit: If scout team isn't doing there job, is that impacting our team?

Its matters when it comes to practice, meetings, lifting and all the other things that go with playing football, not just the games.

Uh no, I shouldn’t take Saban over Frost on any day, nor would I. You’re welcome to prefer him though. And that’s not meant to disparage Nick Saban in any way.

Totally agree. I would never presume to know more about what each player's assignments were on any given play than Frost himself...but that last touchdown drive they had was pathetic defense. I'm told that I was incorrect that Young was to blame on that touchdown run and that Reed was supposed to cover the middle but holy crap...there was nobody home in the middle at all. I really believe that Chinander is going to produce a really great run defense - even as early as this season. But there are a couple guys who just don't read the field well at all still. Need to correct that. Overall though - as the stats show - we've been stout against the run through two games.

It seems like every week to week QB injury is handled this way by every school.

We're 18th in rushing offense and 21st in rushing defense. Even our 42nd total offense is a good improvement over last year (87th).

As I noted elsewhere: We out-gained Colorado by 170 yards. BYU out-gained us by 66 yards We out-rushed Colorado by 285 yards. BYU out-rushed us by 6 yards Against Colorado we averaged 6.8 yards per play. Against BYU we averaged 5.7 yards per play Against Colorado we completed 65.5% of our passes. Against BYU we completed 58.5% of our passes Against Colorado we had 7 sacks. Against BYU we had 3 sacks Against Colorado our starting QB went down with injury when we could have iced the game with a couple more first downs. Our starting QB played the entire game against BYU. So it's pretty disingenuous to try to say to try to play the Riley/BYU card. There are A LOT of differences. Not that you probably care.
