Got the grant that ate up all of Fall semester. Now on to doing the actual study.
-
@Thanks_Tom RR my wife always just says, great job putting in a ton of extra work, as your reward we've got even more work for you.
I appreciate it though.

Writing grants in an unsupportive academic environment is the most soul sucking thing I've ever done.

@teachercd As a young professor, tenure is like strapping a time-bomb on your chest. You have 5 years to prove to the university you have a stable, productive, and independently-funded research program with the added charges of service and teaching expectations. The dream of becoming an old professor is secondary to the hope you can keep your job following your tenure review.

"Strapping a bomb to your chest! Haha! I bet it is! I thought it was 7 years though, but still...it is amazing that the system is set up in such a "good ole boy" way...
Basically you are getting hazed for 5 years (or less!) and then once you are "in" you are pretty protected (right?).
My buddy is a Prof at PSU now...his last stop before that was in New Zealand.

The difference between pre-tenured and tenured status is that colleges can choose to not renew the contract and terminate a professor without cause or reason during the probationary, pre-tenured period. The university has to demonstrate incompetence or unprofessional conduct before firing a tenured professor. So, tenure provides some job security, but it does not make you bullet-proof. You still get evaluated for promotions and raises; you just get the right to be fired with cause.

Given the comment about having a close knit team and the fact that I do research on developing connection between people, I'm trying to a way to get the team to let me work with them. Odds of it happening are almost zero, but it would be pretty dang awesome.

Off to Indiana for a very cold football game.

Does anyone know where to buy a lil' red Halloween costume?

Grant application in. Way too much work for such a small one.

Area code gate has started!

Seriously Mav, you gotta remind us that missing out on Bookie sucked? Boo this man.

If status updates are going away, it would seem I'm going to have to start posting in threads. See you all on the flip side.

Just put in my notice at my job a month in advance. Told by my boss that I should have trusted them more and told them sooner. Also told by my boss I might lose my benefits because I'm only part time during the summer. Take home message: Don't notify employer in advance that you're leaving, just stop showing up. What BS.

@Huskerzoo Yeah, moving around in academic jobs can be tough on any relationship between you and more senior members of the department you are leaving. One reason is because filling a open faculty line can be a 1-2 yr prospect for the department. Honestly, you got to do what is best for you.
As far as when you should tell your chair you are on the market, you got to read your own situation. It does not always pay to tell your chair you are leaving early in the process because I have heard stories about chairs trying to sandbag your candidacy. On the other hand, I have heard riffs can form between you and your former colleagues if you wait too late or leave under uncertain terms.
Moving past all of these generalities and worst case scenarios, from what I know about your situation, you are making a good move. It is hard living apart for a spouse, so getting appointments at the same university is awesome.

Off-season posts or a colonoscopy?

Anyone have any general house buying advice?

Did the seemingly impossible. Wife and I offered tenure track positions in the same department. Chair of the department is also a husker fan. Life is good.

It can't be coincidence that @Huskerzoo and his wife accept new faculty positions the same time that KU announces a new course offering (mentioned in @RedSavage's update). First, welcome to Lawrence. Second, which of you is teaching that course?

Don't think this second half is going to go well.
-
@JJ Husker only by request. I'm only minorly superstitious myself, I held off making this post for a whole half.

Don't think this basketball game is going to go well.

@Huskerzoo You and me both, man.

@HuskerzooYou really need to make another status update like this one soon. #superstition

Well humph. Wife didn't get the number 1 job we were aiming for. Might be another year of living apart.

Winter break is a magical time of the year.

Syracuse's passing game seems to rely on running backwards 10 yards than throwing it out of bounds.

I've been hard on him all season, but...Lamar Jackson, kid might just be exactly what we need next season.

@Redux that's why I said next year.
In all honesty, I think a strong sports psychologist would go a long way for some of our players. Lightbourne and Jackson among those who could benefit the most.
-
attitude and effort is much better. Agree with @StPaulHusker, tackling still needs to get better if he wants to make it in the league. Several times it looks like he tries to go low with the shoulder rather than initiating contact through the player.

It would be awesome if it didn't feel like my brain was trying to escape my skull.

Walgreens cheaper version of Excedrin Migraine, the stuff works and within 15 mins. It what @Reduxsaid is true, then you'll have that for a week or 2.
