  1. At the request of Zoogs.... Interesting to say the least.... https://soundcloud.com/1620-the-zone-omaha/jason-peter-interview-09-17-13
  2. why was the ucla game the breaking point for so many fans? not the first time we have been blown out, and some could argue this was not even close to the worst. by all accounts, ucla is a pretty good team and we are young. my guess would be it is because of how we lost. we were up 21-3 and should have easily won. we could have just ran the ball and played base defense and won soundly. we are tired of seeing the collapses, but bo also knows how to give us just enough hope to make us believe things are fixed. that is what makes it so rough. also, the offense failed, and that was supposed to be the saving grace of our team. however, i really started this post because zoogies alluded to this topic and i wanted to hear his thoughts. finally, the ucla loss hurt and is demoralizing, but i still think bo could be out guy. we have talent, now we need time.

  4. Brian Christopherson ‏@HuskerExtraBC 20m All eyes on the money down: #Huskers were just 1 of 11 last yr on 3rd down against UCLA. One reason why Bruins had ball for almost 38 mins.
  5. Things I hope to see tonight 1. VV taking the next step. He did a great job must of the time last week of eating the double team and driving them backwards. Now make some plays off of that push and maintain that level of play longer. 2. Limited contact on Taylor. I think the shoulder was hurt more than anyone admit.. Last time it was a quiet week about an injury of his this long, his ankle was jacked up. 3. Taking in space. Always a key against spread offenses. Last week was hit and miss. Want to get of the field, limit the YAC. 4. Stronger OLine play. They were inconsistent against Wyoming. A lot of talk about their depth and experience and yet they looked lost way more than they should have last week. Spencer long needs to partylike the AA we all think he can be. More than once he was worked over. ARod maintain a solid game instead of looking great one drive and sucking the next two. 5. Look deep. Only long pass came on Jake Long's catch on the tip from Q. Those plays were there from the second quarter on last week and Beck didn't go there. 6. LBs. The position and playing time seems to still be up for grabs. Young cats go get it. 7. Communication. Will be a process for a young defense, today take that next step and bulls on it. 8. Charles Jackson. Let him play. He could be the answer against these spread teams. Andrew Green showed last week he may actually be regressing through his career. 9. NEWBY IN THE ENDZONE. I've always been in his camp suckas. Time for some pay dirt. Now, what say you gentlemen???? And ladies, sorry ladyhawke and Moiraine
  6. Eric Crouch Once Asked His Lineman To Spit In His Mouth A reader alerted us to this story, which was written by former Nebraska quarterback and Heisman winner Eric Crouch for HuddlePass.com, a website featuring various first-person accounts from former college football stars about their playing days.
  7. After an extremely disappointing home opener, I am torn on this week's line. That being said, I am going to take us to cover and I'll take the under. Southern Miss turned the ball over 7 times in their opener and they are on a 13 game losing streak. I don't see how it gets any better for them when they travel to Lincoln. I think the team is going to respond this week and they're going to come out and play some inspired, physical football.

  10. Wyoming (0-0) at Nebraska (0-0) Aug. 31, 8:00, BTN Why You Should Give A Hoot: It wasn’t exactly the way Nebraska might have hoped to end the season after winning six straight games to close out the regular season, losing to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship and Georgia in the Capital One Bowl by a combined score of 115 to 62. The Huskers are in tune-up mode with Southern Miss next week before the big showdown against UCLA, and after that they’ll probably be favored in every game up until the November date with Michigan. But to start out they have to deal with a plucky Wyoming squad with a good quarterback in Brett Smith and potentially dangerous offense. The Cowboys could use a big, shocking win to show the new Mountain West that they deserve to be in the conference title hunt. It’ll be a fight to keep this close, but the Huskers might be looking down field a ways to get to the Bruins. Why Wyoming Might Win: Will Nebraska have problems hanging on to the ball again? Fumbles and mistakes were a problem in the losses last season, and if they’re still an issue in any way, UW has to capitalize. The Cowboy offense has good size and quick options who could surprise a potentially inconsistent Husker offense. Why Nebraska Might Win: Get ready for the Big Red Machine as the Huskers run, run and run some more. The offense loses Rex Burkhead, but it has enough great running backs to play around with the combination and keep everyone fresh, while Martinez should be able to do whatever he wants. There’s no real threat of a Cowboy pass rush, so expect a bit of a balanced attack from time to time, all the while keeping Brett Smith on the sidelines. Things will start to break wide open by the second half. Who To Watch Out For: It’s not all Martinez in the backfield. At 5-9 and 190 pounds, junior running back Ameer Abdullah isn’t all that big, but he holds up well, has elite wheels and is an elite kick returner and top receiver averaging 13.1 yards per punt return while catching 24 passes for 178 yards and two scores. He led the team in rushing with 1,137 yards with eight scores, but he only ran for one touchdown over the final eight games. Watch out for a breakout performance to kick things off. - Is Martinez really the best quarterback in this game? Yes, but Brett Smith is one of the nation’s most effective playmakers. He took the program by storm as a true freshman, leading the way to a bowl appearance in 2011, and last year he was even better even though the team didn’t hold up its end of the bargain. He was banged up a bit in the middle of the year, but he came back roaring, throwing 15 touchdown passes and just one pick over the final six games. A great runner, he can take off and make things happen when needed, but he’s better when he uses his arm and his vision to bomb away down the field - Watch out for the Husker defensive front to come out frothing at the mouth. After the way last season ended and with some key replacements up front, experience will be made up for be drive. Everyone will be focused on teeing off on Smith. What Will Happen: Wyoming’s pluck will only last so long before Nebraska’s lines start to take over. The Husker offense will explode after a rocky first half. Prediction: Nebraska 48 … Wyoming 14 Line: Nebraska -29 o/u: 65.5 Must See Rating: (5 Hard Knocks – 1 ‘N Sync on the VMAs) … 2.5 Link
  11. This is a big part of what's wrong with health care in the U.S. Expecting a guy--a self employed guy with insurance--to pay $20,000 up front for a surgery that costs around $3,000. Hospitals are greedy. Insurance companies are greedy, evil and dishonest. imo. This just ticks me off. It makes me want to corner our health care system in a dark alley and break a bottle over it's head. And stab it in the neck.
  12. I just finished re-watching Northwestern game last night and two things popped out at me - we are easily our own worst enemy on that field, and it's often not even close. There's plenty of discussion about the horrors of that game in other threads so I wont rehash that here. Instead, I wanted to talk about something else that jumped off the screen at me, something I didn't notice while in Evanston or watching the replay before: Fourth-Quarter Taylor Martinez is scary as hell. The end of that Northwestern game wasn't just good, it was brilliant. It shows why teams are worried about playing Nebraska, and in particular why they're terrified of Taylor Martinez. There's 8:31 on the clock. Northwestern has just scored their last TD and Nebraska trailed 16-28. The first two plays are Martinez runs for 8 and 6 yards. 1st and ten on the Nebraska 34. 1st down, Taylor goes back to pass and nearly gets picked off, the ball pinballing around between three Northwestern defenders. 2nd down, Taylor throws to Jamal Turner in the right flat, the DB makes a brilliant break on the ball and should have intercepted it, but drops it. These two plays highlight the worst of Taylor Martinez. When Nebraska is down, at times he seems to behave as if he's lost his mind. Like Bo recently said, it's seemed like Taylor wants to make a TD on every play. But he's getting better, as evinced by the next series of plays. Because Taylor had enough of this s**t and Took. The f**k. Over. Next play, 3rd & 10 at the Nebraska 34 - Taylor hits Kyler Reed for 16 yards and a first down. Next play, 1st & 10 at the 50 - Taylor hits Ameer Abdullah for a five yard gain. Next, 2nd & 4 at the NW 45 - Taylor hits Quincy Enunwa for seven yards. Next, 1st & 10 at the NW 38, Taylor hits Enunwa again, this time for 30 yards to the NW 8 on a brilliant pass. Next play, 1st & Goal - Taylor hits Taariq Allen for an 8-yard Touchdown. We kick off, Northwestern does absolutely nothing thanks to a swarming defense and has to punt. One of 10 three-and-outs the Blackshirts forced that day. Any argument that we didn't contain Northwestern and Kain Colter has to stop at that stat. Next series - 4:10 on the clock, Nebraska now trails 23-28 and needs a touchdown drive, now. 1st & 10 at the Nebraska 24 - Taylor hits Enunwa for 31 yards and a 1st down. 1st & 10 at the NW 45 - Taylor rushes for 2 yards. 2nd & 8 at the NW 43 - Taylor hits Kenny Bell for five yards. 3rd & 3 at the NW 38 - Taylor hits Enunwa for a six-yard gain and a first down. 1st & 10 at the NW 32 - Taylor hits Turner for a 25 yard gain and a first down. 1st & Goal at the NW 7 - Taylor hits Ben Cotton for a seven-yard Touchdown. We go for two and the try fails. Nebraska takes the lead, 29-28 with 2:08 left on the clock. On those two drives, when we needed a hero, Taylor Martinez went 10/12 for 140 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for another 16 yards on three carries. The drives were nine and six plays, respectively, earned seven first downs and 156 yards. They took 4:38 and gave Nebraska the lead after trailing by double digits midway through the 4th quarter. Northwestern was not playing a prevent defense. They had their safeties in a deep shell and they were playing a loose man coverage underneath. Neither touchdown was given to Nebraska - they took them. In particular, Taylor took them. The first drive nearly started in disaster, as Taylor nearly (should have) threw two INTs in his first two passes. But for some reason, on the road one week after a horrible game at Ohio State, when his offense had been taking aim directly at its feet all day, Taylor stood up and led the team down the field, twice. That is the Taylor Martinez the coaches hoped they'd recruited. That's the Taylor Martinez who earned the starting job as a Redshirt Freshman, and that's the Taylor Martinez that has opposing Defensive Coordinators prepping for Nebraska weeks in advance. He did it against Northwestern, he did it against Penn State, he did it against Michigan State, he did it against Wisconsin and tried to do it again in the Conference Championship, and he tried to do it all in the bowl game against Georgia. Taylor has worked as hard as any Husker at improving himself. He's given up his Spring Break each of the last two years to work with a personal trainer (seriously - who does that?), and spent more time learning to quarterback each summer. Last year he showed marked improvement in both mechanics and decision-making. With the glaring exception of the first-quarter INT at Michigan State, his interceptions are more a product of forcing the issue or missing his spot than the decision of where to throw it. There's something about Taylor that usually takes him a quarter, or a half, to get going. It's almost like a boxer who needs that shot to the face to get his blood flowing, but when he does, watch out. He torched the best defense we played last year and played damned well against the rest (including Georgia, where he was nearly a one-man wrecking crew). We need to bottle that fourth-quarter magic (T-Magic?) and get it going on drive one, first quarter. That's the thing that separates Taylor from the all-time greats at Nebraska (that and the umpty-seven turnovers). This is why I'm so excited about Nebraska's offense this year. Taylor is the guy to lead this offense, but more specifically, Taylor fourth-quarter-comeback Martinez is the guy. We get that guy all game long and there's no reason this offense can't average 50 points a game.

  14. Anyone have a "go to" or lucky husker item? I'm talking like a hat, or a shirt, etc. that you must wear on game day or it's just not going to feel right. For me, it's just a certain hat that I have to wear. Curious if anyone else has any sort of game day apparel quirks?
  15. Double thread. Mods please delete.
  16. please read the following story and then cast your vote. thanks, imo.
  17. Did a few of these threads last year, but hoping to make this a regular weekly thing on huskerboard. Myself, I am taking us to cover and I am also taking the over. I think our offense is going to come out firing and I wouldn't be surprised to see a defensive TD, as well as a Jamal Turner punt return to the house. I envision a score in the neighborhood of 52-17.
