Landlord
In an effort to generate fresh offseason discussion, let's talk about things that Callahan did right in his stay at NU. Please, no sarcastic or angry posts about him doing nothing right or being good at sucking or etc., this is meant to be an honest thread. Here's a few.. * '05 Colorado game. How many people actually thought we were going to win this game? I remember I did, but I also remember that I was made fun of for thinking so and couldn't find anyone who shared that viewpoint. Anyways, what an awesome feeling it was to watch that game. Completely dominating and embarassing our least liked of "rivals". Great stuff. * Clean program. Subtracting the Purify incident (didn't get too much of a punishment, at least as far as we know) he kept his players in line well and didn't allow for a lot of misconduct. Hard to do these days. Feel free to add your own or discuss those already posted before you. Quote Link to comment
huskerguy
The '05 ending was pretty nice, especially the Alamo Bowl. As far as things besides a few games I can't think of much... anything good he did outside of a game probably just gets over shadowed for me... Quote Link to comment

eoltmer
I think he did a great job of recruiting well even though the team struggled. I don't know if he did or did not write checks his body couldn't cash to these kids or not. But he did bring the telent in here. Shame he tried to develop them like they already played college ball. Had the balls to bring a pass happy mentality to the option minded people of Nebraska. Most coaches nationwide new that they would face ridicule from the Nebraska fans if they were to even attempt what callahan did. It really hurt him in the end to jump head first into that fire. But now we have Watson and NU fans have become somewhat accustomed to a passing offense, but we will see a better run team in the future with Pelini. Quote Link to comment
skersfan
I think he filled the offensive trenches. I think Coach Pelini will reap the rewards from BC's efforts there. He also brought a good bunch of QB's to the fray. He made it apparent we needed a defensive mind in the program. I still like the guy and wish him luck with the Jets. I hope as time goes by some of us lose this hate for him. I did not like what happened under his watch, but I turly believe he did the best he could do. That is all you can ask from anyone. Some can, some can not. It proved he was not the right fit for Nebraska. But he was not an evil person on a mission to destroy the program. He may have set us back, but it clearly was not his intention. Let by gones be by gones. Quote Link to comment

And picking up Zac Taylor at the last second was an amazing get for us (otherwise we would have suffered through Dailey or Beck for another season). I like him too, and feel bad that things happened the way that they did, but also agree that he wasn't the right fit. Quote Link to comment
DJR313
Player GPA's rose to all time high levels under his watch. Upgrade in recruiting, new contacts made to areas that had never considered Nebraska before. Provided the vehicle of change for the offense. Although it was a bumpy transition, that period is over and the talent has been upgraded to go with it. Quote Link to comment

HUSKER 37
I sorta enjoyed the throatslash. And the effin' Hillbillies remark...Priceless And he didn't call our players "dumber than the Raders". Quote Link to comment

Landlord
I never really thought of that. Our offense needed to be revamped, and unfortunately for him he's the one who had to do it. If say, Shawn Watson were to be the one they brought in to change how we do things, he would have gotten similar heat for part of it. Quote Link to comment
sea o' red
I remember when I was little and we were winning NCs one thing that really set us apart was the special teams. Set aside thhe place kicking the past couple years and everything else such as the punt/ret, and kickoff/ret has been pretty solid for the most part. Not to mention he recruited Adi Kunalic. Edit:Also, had Callahan done a better job these past couple years, Steve Peterson would still be our AD and Osborne wouldnt. Once Osborne did come back a sense of pride and tradition was brought back to our program. Quote Link to comment

I'm still not convinced our Offense needed to change all that much. (Even if it did, the transition could have been handled in a much smoother way..say by changing your coaching philosophy the 1st couple of seasons to mirror the talent on hand). There's a lot to be said for the power I during the windy months and it's very hard to win "Consistently" (10-11+ wins every season like we grew accustomed to). You can say that some NFL teams like the NEPatriots as of late are "Passing" teams that are winning most of their games in cold weather (Minus the "Prairie Winds"), but in those cases, you're also dealing with the top 4 or 5 Professional QBs and/or Receivers in the game and even they don't win year in/year out as much as we did long term. Football needs to evolve or it will become boring and predictable, but the WCO is on a downward slope as the Defenses are catching up. It seems like this season, we're gearing our Linebackers to be lighter/faster..Wasn't one of our problems last season with our LBs that the weren't strong/heavy enough to tackle? Seems like the few times they were in position, they just tried to hold on for the ride, rather than punish the ball carrier. Quote Link to comment
Kruzu
I have to agree with those of you who mentioned the revamped offense. I think we owe Cally a debt of gratitude for that. You can say what you will about the option still being viable, but I don't believe that it is, and Callahan made a quick overhaul for us. I was a Bo supporter the first time around and am thrilled that he's back, but I was a Cally fan as well and if he would have done some things differently I would be OK with him at the helm.
