Virginia Airport for Blacksburg????

Recommended Posts

It's a straight shot about 25 miles down I-81 from the Roanoke airport to the exit for Blacksburg. I-81 is hilly and windy here, but it's a 4 lane (2 each way) interstate so it should be 30 minutes or so depending on where you are staying in Blacksburg/Christianburg. It's also a very pretty drive.

Other options to check for probably better prices and more time options, but a longer drive, would be Greensboro, Charlott, or RDU in North Carolina, or Richmond VA. I don't guarantee it, but I'd think all would be within 3 hours. Dulles and Reagan in Washington would be a bit further.

I live in Blacksburg and I just flew out of Greensboro (NC). It is a 2.5 hrs drive. Typically cheaper than Roanoke. However, at times you can find fairly cheap flights into Roanoke via Chicago. We flew to KC last year on our way to Lincoln from Roanoke very cheap, but if you plan on renting a car you may want to check the Greensboro fairs as the drive is easy. I would probably be more concerned about hotels at this time as they are hard to come by in B'burg. Staying in Roanoke is not bad (and inexpensive) but give yourself plenty of time to drive on game day.

I'd say about 4 hours from Dulles, another 1/2 hour from Reagan, depending on the time of day. If you're getting in after 3 or so until late you'll hit a lot of traffic and easily burn another 1/2 hour or more, especially from Reagan.

After looking for flights out of Omaha to Roanoke. And seeing that they were either HOLY CRAP expensive or had 14 hour layovers in Chicago. We decided to drive..... Figured it's about 16 hours + pit stops and possible traffic from Sioux City to Blacksburg.....

Making it a vacation of sorts.
