WEATHER: HOTTEST JANUARY EVER SAY CLIMATE EXPERTS

The snow that blanketed Britain last month

CLIMATE scientists yesterday stunned Britons suffering the coldest winter for 30 years by claiming last month was the hottest January the world has ever seen.

The remarkable claim, based on global satellite data, follows Arctic temperatures that brought snow, ice and travel chaos to millions in the UK.

At the height of the big freeze, the entire country was blanketed in snow. But Australian weather expert Professor Neville Nicholls, of Monash University in Melbourne, said yesterday: "January, according to satellite data, was the hottest January we've ever seen.

"Last November was the hottest November we've ever seen. November-January as a whole is the hottest November-January the world has seen." Veteran climatologist Professor Nicholls was speaking at an online climate change briefing, added: "It's not warming the same everywhere but it is really quite challenging to find places that haven't warmed in the past 50 years."

His extraordinary claims came after the World Meteorological Organisation revealed 2000 to 2009 was the hottest decade since records began in 1850.

But UK forecaster Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, said: "If it is the case and it is borne out that January was the hottest on record, it is still no marker towards climate change.

"It's all part of a cyclical issue and nothing should be read too deeply into that.

"It's been the coldest for 30 years in Britain but we predicted that and climate change always tends t o throw up anomalies. It's all in line with predictions and I won't be sold on climate change at all. The data is either faulty or manufactured to make it look like it shouldn't."

The Met Office yesterday revealed it would re-examine 150 years of world temperature records to restore faith in its data in the wake of a number of high-profile blunders dubbed "climategate".

Here's a satellite shot of Britain this winter showing the first time in recent memory the entire country was covered in snow:

Climategate erupted when the leading Global Warming research university in Britain had their systems hacked. The hack discovered corruption, misleading or outright false data being provided, and in general called the science behind "global warming" into question. This isn't to say that global warming isn't real, it's just showing that, like everything, we need to look at it from a skeptical point of view and demand proof, not hype.

It is annoying to me how the political climate (hah, pun) has become such that discussions about climate are in the political and religious discussion forum instead of general discussion forum. Soon the only things that won't be in this forum will be Porn and baby photos.

Make sure to keep those separate . . .

When climate science became a vehicle for world egalitarianism, it became political. When fascistic methods of censorship, ostracization of peers, and character assassination are the accepted norm employed by the scientific community used to discredit, instead of honest debate over legitimate inquiry of scientific methodology is when it became political.

Like the human beings behind it, science is not immune to fraud. Just like stem cell or cloning researchers publishing fake results, whenever the stakes are high enough, there will be that possibility. Global warming is a very high stakes, hot topic issue. Any science should be scrutinized for an agenda, in either direction. Nonetheless, the entire scandal is pretty overblown - it is hardly a case of a concerted effort at fabrication by one side of the debate, which I feel it's sometimes portrayed as. And, I feel a lot of it is not fabrication at all, but sloppiness or carelessness in producing work. Really irresponsible, but not with malicious intent.

Finally, the whole article title is incredibly misleading. Mrs. Bowater should face some heavy censure for throwing out a headline like that in a hot topic debate just to grab attention, while completely misappropriating the actual claims the experts made. The world has been around for a mite longer than since 1850. And why is it so stunning? There's also a bit more to the world than Great Britain. And even if it were the coldest January on record, why is that so stunning? Man-influenced climate change isn't about warming.

But UK forecaster Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, said: “If it is the case and it is borne out that January was the hottest on record, it is still no marker towards climate change.

This quote from the article actually pretty much nails it. Global warming is about trends, not about a single month's data. That's incredibly short-sighted, but it makes people pay attention, I guess.

Obviously, things happen in cycles. As college football fans, we should know this just as we know SEC dominance ain't going to last forever.

And, what the heck is "Positive Weather Solutions"? Mentioned in the same breath and vein as universities and the IPCC, quoting their experts...but they could not possibly look less legit. Their website doesn't make them look legit, even by shoddy interest group standards(it pretty much looks like one of those placeholder advertisement websites). And so we're clear, PWS is an institution that unashamedly has an agenda. I could go more into this, but that page I linked to is 5th grade report quality stuff. These guys - and people who read this and accept it - don't get to claim any high ground over the offending scientists in climategate. In fact, they just don't get to make claims altogether.
