af4liberty
So is this some new 'tradition' thing? I don't remember seeing this before, what's the significance? Quote Link to comment
Enhance
The students have been taking their shoes off during kick offs ever since I've been here (four years), and as far as I know they were doing it before that. I don't know when or why it started, though. Quote Link to comment
af4liberty
Hmm, I've never noticed it before. I've been a die-hard fan for 30 years but never seen this before. Of course, I don't normally stare hard at fans in the stadium. My wife actually noticed. Quote Link to comment
huskerswrkhavoc
I believe it was just getting started around my freshman year (07 season). I don't know if it was going before that or not, but I know it's grown a lot since then. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
An old Huskerboard thread that might shed a little light: Shoes at Kickoff? Quote Link to comment
Foppa
I think it's just a tribute for the kicker, and the kick-off. Started a couple of years after I graduated. Kind of a cool thing I think. Quote Link to comment
Hercules
That may have been a tradition that started with the arrival of Adi Kunalic... Did he kick without a shoe? Quote Link to comment
Huskinator
It was that way when I used to be in school....graduated in 06....also went and sat in student section in 07 while my wife was still there Quote Link to comment
HeyBurke
Wasn't it started for Adi in '07? He was known as "Das Boot", after all. Quote Link to comment
Jadler
It was that way when I used to be in school....graduated in 06....also went and sat in student section in 07 while my wife was still there We've been doing it for quite a while. Quote Link to comment
HuskerShark
It began with Adi Kunalic sending so many kickoffs through the back of the endzone, and I actually wondered if this would continue this year since he is no longer here. I'm glad it did cuz I like it! Quote Link to comment
'SkerNation
It means boot (shoe) it Quote Link to comment
Jarred04
Saw it when I was in school, but don't remember it until my Soph year ('05). Hated it then, hate it now. People don't do it when it's raining or cold out, and it's not like EVERYONE does it. We already have the spirit fingers thing during kickoff, so I don't see why we need another. ladyhawke
I think it's cool. What's the 'spirit finger' thing? The shoe thing is very visible! Quote Link to comment
Steel City Husker
I'm with ladyhawke on this one. Very cool thing to do for kickoffs. I think the love that Husker fans show for kickers is one-of-a-kind (and based on a nice history of EXCELLENT kickers). His success surprised the hell out of me, but Maher seems legit, and I think he's got a decent shot at the NFL. I would imagine that this kind of tradition and interest could keep the "Kicker U" title in Lincoln for a while. Keep the nerves-of-steel, big-legged Nebraska boys comin'! BTW, his 3rd quarter punt was ridiculous. Relatedly, anyone have a theory as to why our team has had such a great run of kickers? Luck? Did Boyd Epley create some secret quad machine? Just curious...
