Maybe we could move the Laquon Treadwell thread here, so it is not buried in the Recruiting Profiles.

Brandon Marcello of the (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger reached Bumphis by telephone Tuesday afternoon. Bumphis said, in part, "Mississippi State never offered me money. Other schools did, I will say that."

Chad Bumphis @ImSo_BalisMade1

Funny. I tweet that and the only people offended are my sweet little rebel followers!! Guilty much??? Possibly. Lol

One of the best comebacks I have read in a long time.

Would be very surprised if nothing comes of this sanction wise. Too many good players signed to play there to not look into it. Saw a stat that from 06-12 Ole Miss didn't sign a single recruit inside the top 20. And we all know how their day is going so far.

The coach or whoever it was tweeting a week ago or so about contacting their compliance dept about any infractions was also a huge guilty move in my opinion. Shouldnt he just ignore sh#t instead of trying to attack back?

How does a school go from perennial bottomfeeder with a 6-6 record to Top 5 class?

freeze on espn radio reiterating their innocence.

Alright. Honesty check guys, with a "what if" scenario. Be honest.

At this time next year, following an 11-3 season, Nebraska signs the nations best recruiting class according to ESPN. Numberous top 100's. What are the talking heads saying?

I guarantee you there would be cheap shots. I can hear Chris Fowler now " although a lot of those commitments are questionable at best". " a lot of rumors flying around that recruits have been receiving some extra benefits (in air quotes) from their boosters. For more we bring in Desmond Howard.

Momentum of an 11-3 season helped propel NU back to the top of several recruits minds as reflected in our latest top 10 rankings!

Not! Apparently a 7-6 season was enough to convince top recruits that Ole Miss is on its way to heights the program rarely sees....9 WINS!!! And out of the SEC cellar!

Guarantee ESPN would have one talking head say something about it being fishy. But not a team in the SEC.

First of all ESPN would never allow that unless we were 13-1 or 14-0, that's just how it works. But if by some fluke it did they would say Bo Penili needs to control his emotions so the mom's don't get scared. Otherwise they would have had a few more 5* guys.

We have won 5 NCs and played for 3 conference championships in the last 4 years. We have a top 15 recruiting class this year. We have won at least 9 games the last 4 years and 10 games last year.

We are no where close to a 6 and 6 bottom feeder in the conference. We are clearly a program that is better than most other programs. We are not where we want to be but have been headed in that direction for the last 4 years. If we sign a top 5 class next year, it would be no where close to as big of head scratcher as Ol Miss.

Could also be the first recruiting cycle for their young first-year head coach, after he turned around Arkansas State to a 10-2 record previously. Ole Miss made a bowl for the first time since 2009 in his first year. It's possible he is one hell of an active recruiter. Nebraska signed a #1 class after our 5-6 season under a new head coach's first recruiting class.

2005? We finished ranked 5th and that's only because we signed 30 players which included 12 junior college players.

Here is what makes this smell like a rat. (3) 5 star commits and none of them are from Mississippi... Really?

According to Scout, Antonio Conner is a 5 star DB from Batesville, MS

He was probably going off Rivals where Nkemdiche, Treadwell, and Tunsil are the only 5 Stars.

Connor and Hooks are 5 Stars on other sites, I know.

It is a joke. These kids can't complain when sanctions come down on them.

Why would they care? They won't be around then and they'll have gotten paid!

Spencer Hall, who writes about college football at Every Day Should Be Saturday, and SBNation Recruiting's Bud Elliott's did a Q&A on Deadspin:

Do the kids like their money in a briefcase, or are they old school and prefer it in a bag that has a giant dollar sign on it?

SpencerHallEDSBS

The preferred delivery system is a mix of phone cards, gift cards, and then cash delivered via church donation via pastor. I wish I was making that up.

How much money did Ole Miss slip under the table for its class?

SBNationRecruiting

Probably not as much as you would think. They have really special connections to three of their top players (Nkemdiche's brother plays for them, Treadwell's best friend plays for them, and pretty much anyone from South Panola HS, like Conner, heads to Ole Miss.). The stars just aligned for them, and the town was instrumental in bringing in the class. Official visits to Ole Miss this year were raved about.

I'm not asking for any speculation or anything like that, but on a scale of 1-10, how skeptical are you that everything going on in Oxford is on the up and up?

SpencerHallEDSBS

I think starting with "up and up" in college football recruiting is probably the wrong approach.

To be fair, Nkemdiche's brother is on the roster there.

How do you have a walk of champions, when you have no championships?

If you go a bit further to the stadium there's a door that says "Visitor's Lockerroom".

Honestly....even I would be questioning it, and I wouldn't be offended by the fact that someone else is either. There is no reason Nebraska should be signing a #1, or even top 5 class right now. Pelini is a decent recruiter...but we're still going to finish out of the top 15 9 times out of 10. At least Ole Miss is in the SEC and has talent in their back yard. If Nebraska had just pulled in the haul that they did, I'd be thinking something fishy was going on. Even the biggest Husker homers would have to pause for a second and scratch their head.

It used to just be 'the walk' before they brought in a sponsor.

I think the only way the SEC schools get caught is if the IRS finally investigates. I can't imagine these players are paying taxes correctly on the money, and the feds have the power to get people talking. Then the NCAA will have enough evidence to do something, if they're going to do anything.

I think it would be tough for the IRS to do anything. Cause i'm sure the kids arn't doing taxes at all on the money. Nor would the booster or who ever paid them report it either. As that would be good evidence the NCAA could use against them

Exactly why the IRS would get involved. Penalties for tax evasion are quite severe, so it's easy for a prosecutor to offer immunity to get people talking. And that money came from somewhere, no matter how it changed hands.

makes me think that the school knowingly lied to the impending recruits about Hugh Freeze not being named to make sure they signed. Now those kids are stuck I think.

If it comes out they did do that, I wonder if the NCAA will allow them to transfer out without penalty? I hope Ole Miss gets strong sanctions, its obvious them and Freeze are dirty

A good friends dad was on the support staff when Freeze was at a different school. Nothing to do with recruiting, but he does seem to lack ethics in general from listening to my friend.

Not sure how that would work. They did allow the PSU players to transfer, but that was a very unique case and penalty. Wondering if this ends similar to what Miami got, don't recall if players were allowed to transfer in that case or not.

Forget smoke, there's been a black blizzard surrounding SEC recruiting. The firemen (NCAA) and chiefs (school presidents) are willing to let it burn as long as money keeps flowing (TV).
