Nexus
Mary Weatherholt has a way of making people change their weekend plans. Playing for a national championship tends to do that. The Husker senior continued her run through the NCAA women’s singles tennis field with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alabama’s Alexa Guarachi in a semifinal match Sunday played indoors at the University of Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center. Weatherholt (30-1), ranked No. 11 nationally, will face defending NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in the finals Monday. The No. 13 Gibbs, the 2012 NCAA singles and doubles champion, rolled past Texas’ Breaunna Addison 6-1, 6-1 in her semifinal. It was Weatherholt’s fifth win in the tournament, and her surge has brought NU head coach Scott Jacobson to the scene. NUance
“I spent six hours a day, five days a week as a nanny since the first of the year,” Weatherholt said, explaining how she was in charge of Liam, her godson and the son of Will Henry and wife Jennifer (Mary's best friend). From 6:30 every morning until 30 minutes into the noon hour, “It worked out really well,” Weatherholt said. “Jen had someone she could trust with Liam, and now she’s been able to transition from full-time at the office to part-time at home.” Nanny for Will Henry's son.
