Miles Reaction to Huskers NCAA Selection

Recommended Posts

Miles said he wasn't sweating Nebraska getting its seventh NCAA tourney bid in history. He gladly signed off on a public ceremony with a live cut-in from CBS.

“I told them it's going to be great TV either way,” he said. “If we get in, they're going to see the support and the energy level. If we don't, they're going to burn the place down.”

Miles was worried, however, about being slotted in a Tuesday or Wednesday first-round game — or play-in game — in Dayton, Ohio. Instead, Big Ten rival Iowa, which lost six of its past seven games, will have to scramble to play on short notice.

“That whole quick turnaround and uncertainty worries you,” Miles said. “When I saw BYU in, that was the first one where I went, 'Oh, boy, that's got Dayton written all over it for us.' ”

Soon, Creighton's name as a No 3 seed in San Antonio appeared on the PBA big screen, drawing loud and lusty booing. But Miles had a thought.

“They might just be crazy enough to stick the Huskers down there, too,” he said.

“I was just so happy for A, our players, and B, our fans,” said Nebraska coach Tim Miles, who’s guided Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament in only his second season.

It’s Nebraska’s first postseason appearance since a 2011 first-round loss in the National Invitation Tournament to Wichita State.

“I mean, just as much emotion as the fans put in … they invested emotionally,” Miles said. “They’ve been burned a few times. They felt like they were the Cubbies, and I kept telling them let’s pretend we’re the Red Sox.”
