Husker fans show up in droves - even without the Huskers playing

Recommended Posts

To no one's great surprise, Husker women’s basketball fans came out in force Saturday for the NCAA Tournament Lincoln Regional.

They were buying tickets. We knew that weeks ago. When Nebraska lost to BYU in the second round last week in Los Angeles, you had to wonder if they would still come. But a sea of red flooded the Haymarket District before Saturday's games and settled into their seats for the UConn-BYU matchup. During a lull before the tip — you knew this would happen at least once — a lone Husker fan called out, “Go … Big … Red!”

The requisite “Go Big Red!” from the rest of the crowd resonated throughout Pinnacle Bank Arena, followed by a round of applause.

Yeah, go ahead and take a bow. You’ve earned it. Announced attendance at the Lincoln Regional was 9,585, the highest in the NCAA women’s tournament so far.

It just adds to a remarkable year for Husker women’s sports.

The bowling team won a national title in 2013 and is ranked No. 2 heading into this year's NCAA event. Nebraska softball, tennis, soccer, volleyball and basketball have all hosted first and second or regional rounds of NCAA tournaments in the past year.

Lincoln has become a go-to site for the NCAA to come calling in the postseason.
