Sound System/ Inernet Update in Stadium

Recommended Posts

Work to upgrade the Memorial Stadium game day experience began last month and is expected to continue through the summer.

The University of Nebraska awarded bids on three separate projects as part of a $12.3 million upgrade to the stadium approved by the Board of Regents in January.
Downs Electric Inc., of Omaha, began replacing speakers around the stadium on April 14. The 124-day project was awarded to Downs for just over $2 million.
Wireless access is being beefed up around Memorial Stadium by CDW Government LLC of Vernon Hills, which began installing a Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi System for $6.1 million on April 28, bid documents show.
Finally, BNY Production of Sioux City, Iowa, has been awarded the installation of a Meyer Sound loudspeaker for $819,000.
The speaker — specified by NU — was ordered the first week of April, Chris Anderson, director of athletic community relations said, and will ship the first week of July.
Two other pieces of the project — new HuskerVision equipment and a mobile game day app — are also moving forward and expected to be completed before the Huskers’ Aug. 30 season opener against Florida Atlantic.

As a HUGE fan of football and the Huskers, I am more than excited to get WiFi. You'll never find me being distracted during the game! If anything, it'll help keep the damn kids in the stadium. From what I hear, they leave because they can't update their selfies and reactions to Twitter.

So why am I excited? Player stats. Also, we are left in the dark about injuries and such while people at home get some sort of update from the sideline reporter. Score updates from other games that could give a lot more meaning to our game.

Those sorts of things take just a few seconds with WiFi. Meanwhile, what we have now, which is pretty close to nothing, I am actually wasting more time trying to figure out another score.

I know, small things, but honestly, I'm pretty excited.

All those other good fans will love it for those reasons, and will not be distracted. All those fans who will be distracted by it would have found another way to be distracted anyway. If anything, we're providing more speed to the process and eliminating waiting time that could be spent watching or cheering the team.

One for bad, two for good

Sound improvements and HuskerVision equipment are good.

But Wifi thing is a bad move. I'm afraid paying more attention to their social media/tweeters/smartphone/etc and less attention to the game. Another distraction from cheering on the Huskers.

Try using your phone on game day. People are already doing this. You need to offer modern amenities if you want people to come to the game instead of staying at home.

I hate not being able to check twitter and HB during games. I need something to do between quarters.

Arrowhead added wifi before this last season, and set a fricken record for loudest stadium. Trust me people will still pay attention to the game instead of looking at their phone while it takes 10 hours to update a score list.

all you guys who are against having cell phone coverage at the cathederal are old farts. its the same thing as using a headset to hear the radio play by play. don't hate because we want to see what sipp and faux tweet during the game just like all of you who get that convenience just because you're at home. am/fm radio or cell phone..... its all media.

plus... you really wanna be the school that visitors come to see and say "man, they're really living in a barn in nebraska."? lol probly a little extreme but the point remains... why should we be left behind when everyone else is getting with the dam times.

Pro and cons. There is never a break in the action for TV ads, and even if there was, why would you want to check Twitter for injury reports or comments on that controversial call from people who saw it on TV, or check scores of other games, or any silly crap like that. Eyes on the field at all times. At the game, why not watch the real world through your own eyeballs? There's this thing called transistor radio and big HuskerVision.

yes, I'm an old geezer

Right, because the tv audience watching at home, as a whole don't check twitter during the games. And... Right, because the people who want to check twitter at the games will not be watching the game and glued to their phones the entire game. You're an old fart.

You're surrounded by 90,000 like-minded people and you need social media to be sociable?

Kids today.

When Pelini left the field on a stretcher the 90,000 people in the stands had no idea what was going on. I got on Twitter and was able to get some information.

That's right! I went to that #Nebrasketball game (sorry, twitter lingo) after seeing so much on twitter about #NoSitSunday. I checked twitter during the game, I uploaded pics and stuff about how insane the crowd was. How electric the place was. How awesome to see our basketball team get this kind of energy.

Never missed a dribble. Thanks to the WiFi at the Vault, it was hella easier to do it and hell faster. It allowed me to interact with the guy who sat next to me as we complained about a certain call. It allowed me to talk to my sister about how fun the game is.

I would never miss a snap at a game. But I would love to share with people how awesome the experience is. That's the kind of thing that creates buzz. When people on twitter get updates from @Huskers about fans at the game are having a blast. They say "maybe I should go to a game".

I am excited for it. Updates on player stats, injuries, and just social commentary from a friend in Colorado. I would never be distracted from the game itself, and I will guarantee that I will lose my voice like I do every game. I am sure I speak for a lot of people when I say that.

And if we're going to do this age-ist thing, can I say how annoying it is when older fans sit on their hands, yell at me to sit down, and leave the game early? Over-generalization, but so is "being distracted on their phones!"
