Huskers Football: Blackshirts’ Front Seven Feeds Ache for ’14

Recommended Posts

Coach Pelini is working with the most talent in his defensive front seven since perhaps 2010.

The 2014 squad causes plenty of room for optimism and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing 11 men in black throwing the bones over their latest victims this fall.

Good read. Thanks

I've heard Bo say every year that the defense is the best he's had. I really believe the line has the most talent dating back to Suh, so hopefully they come through.

I don't recall him saying that. Could you find some quotes? I feel like BTN has repeatedly talked up our team every year since joining during the spring/fall ball tours...not necessarily Bo saying it.

Time to come back from off season hibernation.

I truly believe this year we will see the front 7 put on a "monsters of the midway" like performance, with the backups showing they would be good enough to start at a majority of the other major colleges in the country.

I'm really getting to be on this level too. I just hope its not too much kool aid for this year.

Drink the kool aid Coach Power T...this year's defense will spawn multiple Youtube tribute videos....

If they live up to their potential, this front seven could easily be the best we've had since 2010. That's an enormous if, though. I believe that the defensive line will meet those expectations, but that linebacker corps still has me fairly worried.

I feel pretty good about our linebackers, it's the secondary that worries me a bit. If our safeties and CBs can play to the level they've been at the past few years our D is gonna be scary.

I feel just as good about every level of this defense. Each level has one or two places where we are a little less experienced, but they are surrounded by guys that have been playing for a long time. The secondary has to establish a corner opposite J Mitch (I'm pretty confident in J Rose) and Alexander and Gerry will be a good rotation with Coop at safety. Linebacker is a little more unsure but M Rose and Zaire have proven themselves. I'm confident we can field one more good one out of Newby, Banderas, Love, and maybe even Walton. We already know about the d line and the potential they have shown individually. Now we just need them to mesh together as a unit and stay healthy. To say I'm excited about this defense is an understatement though.

Our front seven will need to win a couple of games early for us. LB's and secondary will be a little behind, mainly due to the youth in the secondary and the LB's were shifted around so much last season. Our "O" will be hit and miss as well, so it is up the the "BIG BOYS" up front to keep things on track until everyone else settles in and starts playing without thinking.

Our offense could really be the key to this defense being dominant. Too many short fields take a toll on our defense and our special teams did us no favors also. Clean these things up and give the D a fair shake to do their part and maybe this could be a special unit. At the very least a defense that's capable of doing enough good things to give us a shot in every game. Also yards per rush on first down is a stat to keep an eye on. Keep putting the opposition in third and long and let our best player do what he does best. Allowing short yardage downs and RG cant pin his ears back. Should be fun to watch and I believe this year we put it all together.
