Walk-Ons Receiving Scholarships

Sounds like there will be an announcement about walk-ons receiving scholarships next week. It will be interesting to see who's on the list.

By my count, we have six open spots - I already have Burtch on my list as Pelini announced that this spring. We lost a few upperclassmen who didn't return this year (Guy, Okuyemi and I think Evans) who opened up spots in addition to Moss and Wills.

I would almost guarantee Roach gets a scholarship as he's the classic example of a senior who's going to contribute. After that, it gets interesting. There aren't a lot of other seniors who are going to see the field a lot. The other strong possibilities are underclassmen who don't generally get the nod unless they're playing a lot. They don't have to be on scholarship down the road but it's tricky to balance current players with future commits.

I would think Foltz (Sophomore) and Reilly (Sophomore) would be at the top of the list and probably Fyfe (Sophomore) right with them. Not sure after that.

Guesses?

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez criticized an NCAA rule involving walk-ons and scholarship limits, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

A team is allowed to have 85 players on scholarship, but only 25 in each recruiting class.

If a walk-on who has been in the program for less than two seasons is awarded a scholarship, it counts against the class and overall limits. If he has been in the program for more than two seasons, it counts only against the overall limit.

Didn't think about this until reading an article about recruit Kevin Dillman: We already have four scholarship QBs enrolled. We have Dillman committed and are working on Lamar Jackson. That could be six scholarship QBs and none would graduate for three more years (someone could leave early or switch positions). But I don't know if we'd commit another scholarship to Fyfe with that potential log-jam at QB.

Too many quarterbacks, maybe they assume Stanton will transfer?

Unfortunately if he's not better than third string this year that is quite possible.

People need to flat out chill out. The young man is still just about to start his RFr. year, he has only 1 year in college, most on the scout team and not practicing to play in the offense, whereas Fyfe is about to start his RSo. year and has had 2 full years in the program. If Stanton was still 3rd string this time next year then I would be a bit concerned, but not right now.

I love it when people complain when there aren't enough scholarship QBs on the roster (like when TMart was a junior and Kellogg was his backup) and now there are comments/complaints about having too many QBs on the roster.

Why do you love that?

It's a figure of speech.

It's a weird one since it's pretty common sense that too little and too much of one thing are both equally bad.
