SouthAfricanHusker
Had a conversation with some friends and were trying to figure out the last time the goalposts came down in Lincoln. I remember being at games in the 90s when they did but I can't remember when. My first thought was TOs last home game. That or after the 95 regular season. 1 Quote Link to comment
OH HSKR FAN
I had been that myself recently. If the Huskers were to get a big win at home do you think people will tear down the goalposts? Quote Link to comment
zoogs
When I was a kid growing up in the 90s, I saw other teams tearing down the posts and making it on the nightly sports shows. I was told that we never did this at Nebraska because unlike some other two-bit programs (***cough*** Colorado), winning was the standard and winning big was something we'd always done. Here's a Huskerboard thread from 2007 talking about it: http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/18253-nu-beats-usc-tear-goalpost-down/ ...apparently we did do it, in 1994, against (ugh?) Colorado... 1 Quote Link to comment
SouthAfricanHusker
I don't see us doing it again. I know we didn't after the 2001 OU game. If not then I don't know what it would take. Quote Link to comment
Flood
I recall us doing it several times, actually, though I can't specifically name any years and teams. Two reasons I recall for this: 1. I worked in radio in Omaha at the time and was a big fan then of course. The games we did this for were typically HUGE games that were a) Closer than 4 points with less than 4 minutes to go, and us on the losing side with a cool comeback; or b) games that were guaranteed to decide whether we played for a NCG, late in the season, against another ranked juggernaut. So, imagine Colorado, ranked 2, NU ranked 1, in the Thanksgiving game. Those are the types of games. And I thought, at the time, it was somewhat justified, even if I cringed a little bit too. 2. I recall TO specifically discussing this publicly and asking the crowd to NOT do so. In typical TO fashion, he dryly asked if the fans knew that each goalpost cost 25k or 50k to replace each time it happened. And whether the fans thought the school just happened to have a new set sitting around somewhere for each time it occurred, ready to install for the next game. I believe the AD started greasing the poles and that effectively ended the practice (though some people still tried). And I might recall a minor injury or two related to tearing them down. I am not sure, but do not think, we ever installed the "bend but don't break" hinged posts that came into use around then. Quote Link to comment

okaive
I was expecting it last year after the big win with NW, but I came out disappointed in that regards (It had felt like we won the championship game at the stadium). 1 Quote Link to comment

Landlord is correct. Also, my fraternity house had a piece of the goalposts in 94 after beating CU. I reckon if they were a rival we'd have likely torched the stadium in a celebration pyre. Saunders
I don't even remember the last time I saw goalposts get torn down. Whenever they even hint about it on TV, there seems to be like 50 cops near the endzone. Quote Link to comment
