Fyfe (nothing bad)

I am shocked that noone brought this up (or I just haven't seen the right thread on it), but he looked damned good at the end of Fresno. I believe he is a solid back-up if we actually need him to step up to the plate. He was hitting the numbers when passing, along with not telegraphing where he was going to throw it (which is a problem with TA). I cannot remember who he threw to, but he was looking to his right and then instantly looked left and made the complete pass.

His run was also solid when pressured. IMO he has a a level head and has a the knowledge not to panic when the defense breaks thru the line. I am hoping to see more of him during this season. I know this was just from half a quarter if not less, but the red liquid is running thru my veins with this kid.

I personally thought Tommy looked great against Fresno as well. Let's not forget that this is a Fresno team that has given up 50+ points their first 3 games. When it's all said and done I feel much more confident with Tommy Armstrong going up against the likes of Miami, Michigan St., and Wisconsin over Ryker. He has the experience, and he's 10-1 as a starter. I like our QB situation it's good to know that we have a solid backup in Fyfe, but make no mistake Tommy is and should be the starter of this team.

tommie has the experience........but his passing skills are far from great...... staring down his receivers is a basic flaw that should be corrected in practice....doing this in game time will prove troublesome.

It's a basic flaw QBs have had here for the better part of a decade, and it comes with youth as well.

I think the reason people are high on Fyfe is his maturity and quick decision making. The guy you want to throw to is covered? No big deal, instead of forcing it he makes the high percentage check down to the running back for a big gain.

I think Fyfe could be a huge influence on TA, as long as Tommy is willing to learn and not try to hit a HR on every down.

You don't have to tell me. At this point based on the limited amount I've seen of Fyfe and no real improvement from TA, Ryker should get strong consideration if a game goes south.

If Fyfe can read defenses, make accurate short throws and go through progressions well vs live fire FBS competition, well, I'll believe it when I see it.

Nothing against Fyfe, he seems like a really valuable member of the team and I'm glad he's here. But were he to actually have to start, I suspect we'd have to write off a lot of his games as part of a young player's learning curve. No different than any other young QB.

Other than the guy that thinks it's cool that he has a spy name, who is asking for him to start? There's a difference between recognizing the kid's talents and saying he should be starting.

I don't think that debate seriously exists. I'm suggesting that perhaps people are seriously overrating the "Ryker Fyfe, short pass maestro" thing. Because if he did start games, isn't it reasonable to expect that he'd have a lot of learning on the field to do, at this stage in his career? Wouldn't he be flustered by sophisticated defenses, etc?

It is undeniable that Fyfe goes to his check down when his man isn't open on the main route, and TA tries to force it in. Against better defenses which one will hurt us more?

Do you honestly believe TA shouldn't use check down more (or.. at all)? And learning on the field doesn't stop us from starting TA.

But don't get me wrong, TA is and should be the starter. As of this very second he has the most upside, talent, and experience. It doesn't mean our backups can't be talented in their own rights, or that TA couldn't learn a thing or two (better decision making from Fyfe, and better reads on the zone read from Stanton). This isn't a zero sum game.
