Should the balloon tradition end?

Corn Nation put out an article saying the tradition of releasing a balloon after the first Husker score should end. Should it? And what, if anything, could replace it?

In a few years, the sky will be filled with drones anyway, and while you might not think it a big deal a balloon landing in your garden, a drone brought down by an errant balloon crashing onto your garden, your car, or your Husker tailgate is an entirely different matter altogether.

But when my 13 year-old California-raised daughter saw the balloons go up after the first Husker touchdown last Saturday, she said "that's terrible for the environment!"

 

Are they biodegradable? If so we could say Nebraska is leading the nation in earth-friendly sports based aerial celebrations.

My dirty old pickup puts out emissions that are more damaging in my 6 block drive to work than these damn balloons do in a year. This is stupid.

As for the environment, all the rubber from the balloons released during a game is about the same as one truck tire. So if he's concerned about it, perhaps the Cornnation author of the article could just walk a couple miles up and down to the Salt Creek, pull out half a dozen old tires, and properly dispose of them. That would negate the effect of the balloons for a season. WIN-WIN!

I saw that the student section was holding up cutouts of cats holding up shoes for kickoffs on Saturday. That was pretty funny

I release a kracken at about 9AM every morning

I love the balloon tradition. I can't say the same for the shots of the students holding their shoes in the air though.
