Reeves Settling In at Center

About once a week during the summer, junior Ryne Reeves met with the guy he’d be battling for playing time this fall.

Reeves had spent time at the center position at various points during his Husker career — that spot was actually where he began his freshman season. But in June, after moving there full-time in the spring, he was in need of some tips.
And senior Mark Pelini was more than willing to provide guidance.
So the teammates watched film together, each time going over opponents’ presnap looks so Reeves could get used to recognizing certain indicators that gave away where the pass rush would come from. They talked football strategy and philosophy, and Reeves found himself gaining confidence in his ability to handle the responsibilities.
He’s still learning, but it’s evident that Reeves’ work is paying off. He’s splitting game reps with Pelini, possibly in line to get more work after a productive showing the last two weeks.
“I’m getting more comfortable each day, every practice, every game,” Reeves said. “There’s some things you learn from the film, each game, but I’m getting more comfortable with it.”

There's a lot to like about this situation. Pelini is willing to help out a guy trying to take his starting job. Coach Pelini willing to replace his senior starter with a better performing junior. And Uncle Bo being able to take his nephew out of the starting lineup. This shows a lot of character all the way around especially when just a few years ago people were complaining about the Cottons only getting scholarships because of their dad. It was fun to watch Pelini take on guys that seemed twice his size. Reminded me of Caputo.

Was it Reeves or Pelini (or both) who snapped it about three feet to Tommy's right a couple of times against Rutgers? Once resulting in fumble. Also, I think one of them missed the snap count. Either that or all the rest of our linemen missed it.

That would be Pelini. And he was on the sideline practicing snaps while the defense was trying (and failing) to protect the short field after that turnover.

And then Pelini went out and started the next drive, and there was at least one other bad snap on that drive as well.

That was an odd mistake. Just sort of came out of nowhere. Or at least I hadn't noticed him do that in a game before.
