StPaulHusker
A lot of you have heard that UAB is shutting down their football program. I have a relative playing for them. He was actually a walk on at Nebraska his freshman year. His name is Derek Slaughter. After this season he is going into the military. His Twitter handle is @dslaughter33. Give him a shout and wish him luck after football. Quote Link to comment
irafreak
Truly sad to see a program lose football...UAB will live on in NCAA14! Quote Link to comment
T_O_Bull
With the high cost of running a football program UAB may only be the first of many. With the high and mighty, and I might add, greedy NCAA raking in millions and millions every year I would think they could share some of the wealth to save schools like UAB. StPaulHusker
Wanted to bump this thread because my relative made some headlines on a lot of major sports news websites during his graduation this weekend. Also, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army the day before he graduated. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/uab-linebacker-derek-slaughter-wore-his-helmet-to-graduation--photos-160454879.html Quote Link to comment
wildman
I listen to 93.7 the ticket. Last week the national morning show was talking about this. They were saying that UAB athletic department was making money. The boosters and fans are still fighting to keep the team. Plus the collective feel is it was being shut down not because of money but because of outside influences from Alabama namely Nick Saban. I have no idea why they would think this way or what Nick would have to do with it. But it's sad to see the program go away. Quote Link to comment

I have a feeling that with the changing landscape of college athletics, maybe they were trying to divert funds to the 2 big programs instead of spending money to upgrade UAB. That's my conspiracy theory on it, anyway Quote Link to comment
NUance
He made the news carrying his football helmet during graduation. Nice! LINK 1 Quote Link to comment

I seen a report that UAB is having a financial firm look into the money to see if they can still field a team. Stated it is possible to start the program again as early as 2016 depending on the financial review. Quote Link to comment
RunMickeyRun02
Sounds like it's iffy, but they might just be making a comeback. Quote Link to comment
