Thoughts on Big 10 conference going forward

My thought is if the Big 10 doesn't pick it up some, they are headed for what was the Big East in Football. Irrevelant.

I was hoping for some other big names to land in the Big 10 coaching landscape, but looks like Michigan is going to get some 2nd tier coach.

Riley helps a great deal in name, but has to win and beat some teams like Ohio ST, Michigan ST and Wisconsin to really be taken seriously. Right. Am I thinking in the right frame of mind here?

Will the Big 10 ever be what it once was in terms of traditionally a solid football conference?

Urban Meyer saw right away he could go and dominate the Big 10 at Ohio St. Will someone step up and match him??

Ohio State has a chance to change the perception of the conference this post season. They don't have to win it all, but a victory over Alabama with a 3rd string QB would do wonders.

Furthermore, if Michigan manages to land a splash hire, like Harbaugh, the conference will start to look pretty competitive. Of course, the opposite is true. Time will tell.

Two things need to change.

1 - Programs need to give a crap about the product on the field. Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, and the like need to stop settling for 6-6 and 7-5 or worse.

2 - The QB play needs to improve. Ohio State and Urban Meyer know how to coach up QBs, and it shows in only losing one conference game in 3 years. This is not a coincidence. MSU has been pretty good with Cook. But where are the QBs that will be playing on Sunday? Sure as hell not in the B1G lately. That needs to change, hopefully it will for us with Riley and his track record of getting QBs to the NFL.

I cannot understand this infatuation with "splash" hires.

Put a superior product on the field and then those coaches will translate into cachet names.

Just win a few big games dammit !

Only if you consider the conference is only supposed to be one team. Ohio State deserves it no question, but the rest of the conference is so far off pace it is sickening. Two of the Big 12 could have been there very easily it seems to me.

We have a mountain of work to even get competitive with Wisconsin, let alone Ohio State.

I am anxious to see how Ohio State plays against Bama. I know they are down a bit with a third string QB starting. How far down will it be. I would have rather seen them play Florida State, I think they have a chance against them. The other two may get ugly.

I hope Coach Riley can turn the recruiting battle into a battle for some top kids.

Yes it would be easier to recruit with splash hires. But recruiting is more than a big name.

i think the B1G is doing pretty good seeing how our one champion is in the playoff and neither of the big 12's are.

And the perception is this conference is Ohio State and the chumps. Given they have lost 1 game in conference in 3 years kinda backs that up right now too.

i do not think it is that bad. but i also think it is fluid and the B1G could quickly gain back its cache if some of the blue bloods became consistently respectable again.

The problem is the entire conference is located in a part of the country that has little to no elite talent. Plucking the kids from So Cal Texas and the Deep South is harder these days because our schools don't really have anything to sell them on, while having worse weather and being far from home.

Imo, it is a serious problem and no clear solution.

We could hack into the SEC teams' computers and... do stuff to them?

We need Ohio State to win right now. An NC game win or lose will bring more recruits into the conference, even some of those lesser teams may pick up a blue chip guy. B1G needs to win some bowl games too, that will help. If the Huskers pull off on Saturday that would be an extra good Christmas bonus!
