Chapman: Money speaks louder than words

For the past 10-15 years, it seems Nebraska has identified the root of its football problem as coaching. A significant portion of the fan-base, perhaps spoiled by the 30-plus years of all-time coaching greatness and a top-15 commitment to facilities and budget, are comfortable placing the blame for the Cornhuskers’ decline on the shoulders Frank Solich, Bill Callahan and Bo Pelini — all who have been fired by NU since Tom Osborne finished his remarkable 25-year coaching run in Lincoln.

But what if it’s something else? Or, maybe a combination of factors? Certainly, Nebraska’s coaching has been above average, to say the least — save a four-year span in the mid-2000s. NU has fired three coaches since 2003, but two (Solich and Pelini) won at a combined .730 clip (125-46), captured four division titles, one conference title and played for a national championship.

The quote thingy is being a little glitchy tonight

Lots pf great plays there but I would emphasize plays of more significance than those of plays that were in games that really didn't matter except for the win. How can the Kellog hail mary against Northwestern be rated over the Schlechenger touchdown against Miami in a National Championship game?

Interesting article. Not sure I agree with his conclusions at the end.

As to the top plays I would of thrown TA end zone TD last years bowl game in there not sure where.

Yeah...that guy was a little all over the place in his article, but still some interesting points,,

As for great plays, I'd sorta like to see the two point attempt in the '83 Orange Bowl against Miami in there...I know it failed, but in a way, it symbolized what we were all about, and gained more national respect than another MNC ever would have..

There were some nice runs by Rozier, Craig, LP, and Ameer...and some others I've seemed to have forgotten over the years...And the "rag doll" of Colt McCoy by a man named Suh

All those shown are great plays indeed. But like anything related to Husker football, you get five guys in a room and you'll have six opinions. I was just glad to see T-Mart's TD scramble from the '12 CCG on the list. Probably my all time favorite play to watch. I love that play. (Even though the game sucked)

I agree with TOBull...the best plays were the ones that had impact on the greatest stage. Honestly...1-5 should all be plays from each of the National Title games....

I know we always see the goal line qb keep.

Frazier's big run (although I'd argue that LP's catch on a very high throw and initial score in that game set the tone...)

CS rumbling into the endzone in the Orange Bowl

Not sure which plays stand out from the other two off the top of my head

Then look for plays that kept titles alive or won Conference titles or Heisman titles

So add the Jet's punt return in the game of the century

Crouch's missouri run

Can't single out a Rozier run off the top of my head

Then you need two more so look for the other things just mentioned.

Davison's flea kicker kept the 97 title alive

I'm sure I'm missing an obvious one...gotta go to work.

If you wanted the most spectacular plays then you could include the hail mary and things like that...

I'm not sure we could pick 10 plays to be a definative top 10. We could debate 50 plays and have a quality argument that any of them could be on the list. Rosiers run vs UCLA comes to mind for me. TM's td runs vs K St also. There have been a few defensive plays that would be noteworthy as well. Two more that were significant to me were AA catch and run for the first down in the NW game preceding the hail mary and his catch and diving td vs Michigan.

The Huskers have made a ton of great plays over the years. Offense and Defense and Special Teams. You could put together an hour long highlight reel and not cover it all.

Tommy's run against Florida was a good run, but to me that run was as much about Floridas piss poor tackling as anything. Tommy always gave 100% they didnt on that play. Tommy had a lot of other great runs and passes.

Rozier had a very long run against Oklahoma that, if I recall correctly, was the first or second play from scrimmage after Oklahoma had taken the lead. It wasn't a TD as he got pushed out of bounds, but it was 60 or 70 yards.

In context it was absolutely vital. OU was down that year and hung their hat on trying to give us a loss. That particular run was the very definition of a quick counter punch.

It won't make any top 10 list but it was arguably as important as any during that '83 season.

Tennessee in 1997; Ralph Brown’s jarring hit forced a fumble by UT running back Jamal Lewis and Mike Rucker recovered at the Husker 22-yard line. Tennessee would have taken the lead. Same game; A. Green rushed for 47 yards to the Volunteer 33 on the first play of second half. Tennessee stopped the Huskers running game in the first half.

So, throwing $$ into the program will help win championships, to a point it does seem logical, most top 10 schools do spend on their FB teams. Since SE says, "resources are not an issue" will he be willing (and Harvey too) to put his money where his mouth is...

I bet no, but I am hoping I am wrong. Time will tell.

With the money now involved with the post season along with today's resulting merchandising, I'm tending to believe more ADs and College Presidents with put mucho more emphasis on winning.
