Minnesota_husker
I looked around the board to see if this was posted and didnt see anything--- apologize in advance if it is elsewhere.. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12141973/referee-karl-hess-no-longer-work-acc-games Veteran official Karl Hess has worked his final ACC basketball game. Hess, who has worked ACC games for more than 25 years, told ESPN that his comment made to Atlanta hotel magnate Mit Shah during Sunday's Louisville-Wake Forest game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was made in jest. Shah, the former chairman of the Wake Forest University board of trustees, tweeted after the game an exchange he had with Hess. @mitshahnoble "Karl Hess to me at the Wake-Louisville game tonight.."When I'm older, I want to sit in your seat & watch your Egyptian ass ref a game" #wow Now the CEO of an Atlanta-based hotel management company, Shah is of Indian descent and was born in New Jersey, but grew up in Winston-Salem. Hess confirmed he was delivered the news by the ACC that the league has severed ties with him. Referees are independent contractors and Hess also works for other leagues -- including the Big East, SEC and Big 12. He said he hasn't heard from any of them regarding his status. "It's a sad day and is devastating," Hess told ESPN on Friday. "But I'm responsible." "I wasn't trying to deliberately hurt anyone," he added. "That's not my character. I goof around a lot, and there was no intent to hurt anyone." Calls to the ACC have not been immediately returned. This was not Hess' first bout of controversy in the ACC. From February 2012 until last month Hess did not work any NC State home games in Raleigh, North Carolina, following an incident in which Hess ejected Wolfpack legends Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani, who were attending the game as spectators, due to "excessive demonstration on several calls." The ACC publicly reprimanded him for the incident. Hess worked the 2007 national title game and has also officiated in five Final Fours -- in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2013. --------------------------- Karl Hess ejected Miles from the NCAA tournament game and also was awful in the other game he officiated earlier this year for the Huskers. Guy is a grade-A prick and happy to see the ACC can him. Quote Link to comment
VA Husker Fan
Remind me about the Miles ejection? Didn't Miles come out to point out the shot clock hadn't reset or something like that, and Hess misunderstood why he was coming and quickly T'd him up? Quote Link to comment

Yeah, he was trying to point out the clock malfunction. But he got T'd for being out of the coaching box and that was his second T. Quote Link to comment

He got the guys nationality wrong but basically said would like to see you in my shoes to see how you'd do. If that is considered racist i'm one racist mother because I guess peoples nationalities wrong all the time. Maybe I just see it differently and he's just being a douche, but I dont see racism. Even though what he said was in poor taste, I have to imagine that the ACC is using this as an excuse, rather than an actual reason, to let him go. He's been cancer for a while now. 1 Quote Link to comment
huskeraddict
Only downside to this is that a track record of horrendous officiating is not enough to get you fired from reffing big-time college basketball. We'll see if and when other conferences will allow him to officiate again and what the NCAA Tournament will do with him as well. Quote Link to comment

Whenever you include another person's perceived nationality/ethnicity when trying to insult or yell at them, that's called racism or bigotry. 1 Quote Link to comment

Again, from what we see in the statement, didn't seem like an insult. You're telling me that Hess, the terrible ref that he is, just goes up to the guy and tells him "he'd love for him to be in his shoes" while calling him an Egyptian is an insult? I may simply not have such thin skin as I would consider it a racist remark. Thats like calling me a dirty mick because i'm Norwegian and drinking. Guess I just don't get it, but to each their own. Comish
Whatever one thinks of the reason(s) he's gone..............the fact is that he was an awful ref and let his ego control his calls too often........... Quote Link to comment

Yeah it isn't out and out racism, but it does seem to give the comment a bit of a racial tinge to it. For it to actually be racist he would have to attach some sort of quality to the race element. 1 Quote Link to comment
