Scouting Maryland

Maryland has put together an impressive first season in the Big Ten for Mark Turgeon, as they enter Thursday’s game with a 21-5 record and are tied for second in the conference with a 9-2 mark. The game against Nebraska begins a three-game homestand for Maryland, as the Terrapins will face No. 5 Wisconsin and Michigan before hitting the road for the final two games of the regular season. Maryland has been tough at home, going 15-1 on the season, with the only loss being a 76-65 loss to No. 2 Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Terrapins have had their share of close games at home, as their last three home games have been decided by a total of nine points.

Turgeon is a familiar face for long-time Husker fans, as he played at Kansas from 1984 to 1987 for Larry Brown and also served as an assistant at KU from 1987 to 1992. He served as a head coach at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M before taking the Maryland job prior to the 2011-12 season.
Maryland, which averages 70.8 points per game, feature a trio of double figure scorers in freshman guard Melo Trimble, senior guard Dez Wells and junior forward Jake Layman. The Terrapins rank second nationally in free throws made, as Trimble leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally with 157 free throws, while ranking eighth in the Big Ten at 15.7 points per game. Wells provides a veteran presence who averaged 14.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while Layman is at 13.5 points per game. The Terrapins stretch defenses to the 3-point line, ranking second in the Big Ten with 197 3-pointers while shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc.

Maryland might be the quietest 21-5 team in the country. I feel like they could be 17 win team and no one would have been shocked.

True enough. But, depending on how these last half dozen games and the B10 Tourny play out, the Terps could end up a #2 seed in the dance. Probly no worse than a #3 seed the way things stand right now.

I think they will end up grabbing the two seed.

Basically you just don't want to be on the side of the bracket that has Wisconsin.

Tough turtle troubles lurking for the Huskers tonight.

Hope they come out and play loose and with nothing to lose.

(maybe even Miles will experiment with some other guys................you know........the old bromide about the definition of insanity being doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results......)

If there's anything I'm a little frustrated with Miles about its probably what you said here. The lack of change whether it be the individuals on the floor or the lack of change in how we are attacking offensively. I agree, I hope this changes.

Aside from that, there really isn't much else he can control. If the guys don't know how to put the ball in the hoop, they won't win.

Shields needs to start getting more aggressive and get to the line a bit. I'd like to see Tarin Smith attack more also.

Miles stated that our offensive woes are due to lack of scoring from PG and inside presents. I wish he would start Smith & Smith, in place of Parker & Rivers.

Ha! Soooooo...the same problems as every team that is under 500 in the nation?

We are not under .500 yet.

(it is, however, on the horizon)

That is true...and that is true.
