Walter P’s decision………..and the resulting aftermath

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: This post is NOT an attack or direct blame on Walter P. The cast of characters filling the basketball roster is full of individuals who all collectively share some responsibility for this dumpster fire of a season. Including coaches.

But I was thinking back to this same week last year. Nebraska had won 10 of 12; were playing with tremendous confidence and were in the process of dismantling Ohio St by 16 or 18 in the conference tourney when Walter made a decision. Here I need some help, because I can’t quite recall exactly WHAT that was, but it was in the middle of the 2nd half and I think it had to do with being fancy on a dunk or something in that area. (Someone please refresh me on this). But he made a decision that made a play difficult when an easier route to finish was there. He didn’t finish and subsequently Ohio State went on a big run and won the game. Again, Walt didn’t cause everything that spiraled downward with his decision, but in retrospect, that seemed to be the point where EVERYTHING changed. We lose and draw Baylor. Karl Hess and Miles’s ejection. The start of this season and (again…it happened to be Walt……..couldn’t make free throws………and subsequent lack of confidence in all his shots). The Creighton loss and the unlikely miracle of Incarnate Word and the pre-game dunking technical vs. Hawaii etc. Culminating in this lost season. Again, plenty of blame to go around but looking back, it seems that one year ago THIS week, Nebraska basketball reverted to its historical norms.

2 questions: Who recalls exactly what Walt’s transgression was?

And What was Mile’s technical called for last night? It seems as if Miles (who stands up for his team like any other coach), seems to get more T’s than some of the more flamboyant coaches (like Iowa’s for example).

Anyone know what the call was last night?

And isn’t it really a mystifying anomaly that we have regressed so far in 52 weeks with virtually the same team (minus 1 coach and 1 player)

Is the veneer of confidence really so thin that we can slip SO much so fast?

Or does the answer have more depth to it?

While in game miscues may have a small part to do with the slide, I really feel like something happened to the chemistry of this team over the summer. Probably a battle of wills and egos that can tear a team in half. I am sad to see the basketball program take such a huge tumble. I hope Miles can recover from this season and it doesn't throw a monkey wrench into the works.

One of our guys (Shields maybe?) got his feet tangled up and ended up on the floor near our basket. I think he was trying to pull down an offensive rebound and might have just landed on or tripped over a Maryland player's feet. Miles went crazy thinking our guy was tripped or otherwise fouled. And got slapped with a T. From where Miles was standing at halfcourt it probly looked like a foul.

Had to do some research on this.

We had gone up 48-30 with 13:45 left to play. tOSU had cut the lead to 54-47 before WP made a shot to make it 56-47 with 8:30 to go. tOSU missed a shot on the ensuing possession that WP rebounded. There was a disjointed sequence as we tried to get the ball up the floor and tOSU tried to press. Petteway ended up with the ball in the corner being trapped as WP was unguarded and cut to the hoop from the back side. TP threw WP an ally-oop but WP got too close to the hoop and had to try to make the shot backwards over his head. He missed and tOSU got fouled and made the layup on the other end.

That was the start of a 9-2 run that got tOSU right back in the game. WP scored or assisted on 11 of our last 18 points so he was doing his part in that game but you're right that things have not gone well since roughly that point.

Thanks for the research.........I had sorta remembered that he tried a showman dunk but maybe the pass put him in that position.
