LJS: Miles Right Man but Questions Arise

Recommended Posts

You wonder about Miles' offensive coaching acumen. Yes, we know about the personnel issues. But that doesn't explain the team's disorganization and general lack of purpose on far too many possessions.

You wonder about player development. Nebraska, in finishing 13-18, had at least two veterans take startling steps backward in overall performance.

You perhaps even wonder a bit about Miles' recruiting prowess, considering some disappointing early returns from young players. Nathan Hawkins and Deverell Biggs already are out of the program. Walter Pitchford and Terran Petteway obviously have been key contributors. But Miles needs much more from Nick Fuller and Tai Webster, as well as true freshman center Jake Hammond.

If some young players don't improve rapidly, the pressure intensifies for Miles' touted 2015 class to live up to hyperbole. The best news about Glynn Watson, Jack McVeigh, Michael Jacobson and Ed Morrow is they all appear to have potential as scorers. This just in: Nebraska needs some punch on offense.

Miles will count on Andrew White, the Kansas transfer, for immediate help with outside shooting. But I think Nebraska is overly reliant on three-point shooting. Miles identified his team's deficiency in that area as the No. 1 problem on offense this season. That made me cringe. Three-point shooting generally comes and goes.

While the overall theme of the article is fairly balanced, I will defer to Mile's coaching acumen over Sipples every day of the week......

Sipple's resume as a big time coach ......Makes me cringe....

From the article - "Miles will count on Andrew White, the Kansas transfer, for immediate help with outside shooting. But I think Nebraska is overly reliant on three-point shooting."

" Yes, we know about the personnel issues. But that doesn't explain the team's disorganization and general lack of purpose on far too many possessions."

I completely agree with Sipple on these points.

I still think its too soon to start questioning Miles abilities as a coach, especially considering he was Big Ten Coach of the year last year. It was a bad year, period. No denying that. Personnel, coaching and these things Sipple mentions were all factors, especially this reliance on three point shots, still the fact remains that the shots simply weren't falling. This team couldn't make the ball go in the hoop, especially when it counted. Nobody answere, not even Petteway this year. Nebraska needs a reliable third option. Shields was inconsistent. It was a bad year. I think Miles gets it fixed and I think we've got the talent coming up to help solve these issues.

Sipple makes solid points... I do not think TP leaves though...

I am also confused by mentioning we go to Spain.. is there a guy in Spain i dont know about?

the team is going to Spain to play against good competition so they improve over the offseason.

bold prediction. Petteway will not be back next year and Miles is out in two years. You heard it here first.

Gotta go the other way here......

Petteway WILL be back and Miles will have us in the tourney (if not next year), then the following.

You heard it here second.

Miles signed a 7 year deal for a reason. He and our administration knew this wouldn't be fixed quickly. Really hope we see at least 1 New assistant coach for next year

who do we get rid of our Chicago pipeline coach MO? I would say wait another year before we fire because Hunter and Harriman aren't going anywhere and we only had coach Mollinari and coach Hunter for one and two years respectively.

You can not fire a coach who inherited very little talent and has had only 2 full recruiting cycles. Lets be realistic

Yea I agree and its not like Tim is hiring his buddies hes trying to bring coaches that want to help him win. With that said his buddy Craig Smith was a really good coach.

IF we get an open schollie, it needs to go to a guy who can rebound and play post defense

Petteway has been the best and worst things about this team over the last 2 years. He is wildly inconsistent. I agree on a big man. Is it really that hard to find a 6'10" guy that can average 7 boards and about 10 pts a game in the paint? They need more scoring from the inside. It can all be jump shots.
