Langsdorf Not Looking to Make Drastic Chages to QB Mechanics

Don't look for Nebraska's quarterbacks to undergo significant changes in their throwing motion.

I asked new Husker offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf what he thought about Tommy Armstrong's mechanics as a passer.

"I think he's OK. He's a pretty natural thrower," the coach said. "I mean, there's always little things we can do to tweak. But really, they've been throwing a certain way for a long time. You're not going to change them drastically."

That's generally the case with college and pro QBs, one would think.

"We're just trying to work on being a little more efficient, being a little more compact," Langsdorf said. "We want to get a natural thrower and not have to overhaul a guy a ton ... There's some things we're working on in their release and getting their elbow up higher -- just some fundamental stuff they can work on. But you're not going to change them overnight very easily."

Or perhaps what everyone thinks can be done by a QB coach at this level isn't reality. It seems like a lot of people have this idea that a college coach is going break a player down to ground zero and build him back up again. Not reality.

Yup, and besides, Tommy's throwing mechanics aren't all that bad; they're good enough to be efficient if he can be a little more precise with his reads. I'm sure that's the path Langsdorf is taking with him, and it's the smartest path to travel until we can get more of a natural thrower in Lincoln.

I took it that he's not gonna try to make someone something that they're not....like a special project.....and just work on the little things that will improve on what they already are. Sounds good to me. The idea that you would turn an ok dual-threat passer into a star pocket passer by bringing in a super coach has always sounded far fetched to me. Even worse would be to ignore all the other guys on the team while trying to do it.

i don't know about that, but i would rather see him throw the ball away than force it and throw INT's......that needs to change, nothing worse than a bunch of damn turn overs and losing field position!
