Hittin' the links: Golf talk

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about trying one of those crossovers. I'm a bit of a Ping enthusiast; it's pretty much all I've played since age 15 when I got my first set of Eye 2s. These days I'm using i20s with those new Glide wedges and I absolutely love them. When I got these irons I went with a set that had nothing below a 5-iron; at the time I was fine with it because I had two hybrids I really like to hit, but lately I've struggled to get them airborne and have flirted with the idea of going back to at least a 4-iron. The irons I have now are about as easy to hit as anything I've ever had, but a long iron is still a long iron.

I love my Ping 4 iron Crossover. I hit it a full clublength further than my regular Bridgestone 4 iron. I also bought a Ping 3 iron Crossover. But for some reason I can't hit it worth crap. (Lack of skill maybe? lol)

I made one of the most unlikely birdies I've ever made last night. I drove my tee shot well into the woods on a par 5, 532 yard hole. I punched it out and forward a bit. Approach shot was 200 yards out, center of the fairway. And I hit the best 3 wood shot I've ever hit in my life. As I walked up there, I knew it might be on the green, But the green is elevated, so you can't see until you walk up to it. I ended up 18 inches from the cup. Almost a birdie tap in! (I say "almost" because an 18 incher with a little break isn't a given for me. I've missed putts that short. Missed one last week. lol)

The course where I play is getting a new driving range. Sort of. We already have a "mini" driving range. But it's only about 200 yards long. You can't hit woods or driver. So they are experimenting with letting us hit out over a lake that bounds one of the holes. The lake is ~ 60 yards wide and 400 yards long. The club pro bought eight dozen floating balls to experiment with. I got to be the first one to try it out yesterday morning. It's a blast!

Got a chance to play 18 yesterday at Fox Run in Council Bluffs. Don't normally venture over there but the deal on Golf Now was too good to pass up. Shot 39 on the front in which i bogeyed 3 of the last 4 holes. I should've stopped there. The back 9 was a very up and down 46. Couldn't get the ball off the ground to save my life. All in all some really good shots and some really bad shots. But you can't beat being out on the course.

Played 18 yesterday. I played absolutely terrible. A few good shots overwhelmed by an awful lot of bad shots. Missed several short putts. Missed some easy approach shots. Completely flubbed a couple of iron shots. Topped two drives, and just couldn't get any distance at all off the tee. Just generally sucked in all phases. Posted the worst back nine score I've had in four or five years. f'ing golf.

It must have been the wind. Yeah, that's it. The wind.

Played my home course 4 times now since easter. Not a difficult course by any means but I REALLY enjoy playing these Callaway XR's my buddy got me a deal on. I'm easily a 15+ handicap.

How many holes have you played this spring?

I played 8 holes at a company golf outing on Monday, before the rains washed us out.

I will typically get out 2-3 times a month, but I have been too busy with kids' activities, doing work around our house, and bad weather. Hopefully I can get out and play 18 over Memorial Day, and hit the links a few times after my son's baseball season ends.

Holes is tough...

I have entered 14 rounds in GHIN since the active season began in March. During January and February, I probably snuck in 5-6 rounds on good weather days. And then some evenings after work, I'll practice and then hop around 3-9 holes as time allows. If I had to guess, probably 425 holes or so. That will increase with my competitive season starting next week.

I belong to a club here in Kansas City that is only about 5-10 minutes from my office, so I can make it down there over lunch or after work. It is busy on the weekends, but I can get in a lot of practice and play during the week.

I've played nine holes 13 times. Played 18 holes four times. But I've played more than that. I often swing by after work and play a few holes, but not a full nine. Oddly (or sadly?) the last couple of times I've played my scores have been several strokes higher than they were two months ago. Weird. :dunno:

Got out yesterday to Ashland CC and finally played some good golf. Shot 36 on the front with a double and 2 birdies and then shot 39 on the back. If i could really dial in my game from about 120 yds and in I would be in good shape. Not to complain about a 76 but it very well could've been 72-73 if i could figure it out from those distances.

My aunt and uncle who live in Lincoln would always go play at Ashland CC.

I love going there. It's never too busy and you can usually get a pretty good deal to go play there on GolfNow.
