Tarin Smith Leaving the Team

Recommended Posts

Transfers don't really surprise me anymore, but Tarin looked like he was on track to become a major contributor here for the next few years.

Is there something else going on behind the scenes that we don't know? This strange season has turned into a strange off season.

Kid shoulda played more. I don't blame him for leaving. Not sure why he never stepped up and took control a bit more when he was in there though. He seemed reluctant and unsure at times. He should have been letting it fly a lot more instead of Petteway launching three pointer after three pointer. Tarin was also one of two players on this team, Shields being the other, that looked like they could drive the lane in congestion. Petteway seemed to only drive when the lanes were clear.

Tough loss. He was a talented kid who was starting to show it.

I am not really sure why he transferred. He was going to see his minutes and was starting to pick a few things up.

2 spots open. I dont like one and done but thinking if we can add 1 grad transfer for either a 1 guard who can run point or a down low guy who can play defense.

Sucks, but at the end of the day, we knew there would be changes and you got the feeling by Miles telling the media that they were going to meet and talk about next season, that he was already sending a message to his players before the meeting even happened. Seems like Miles might have the perspective that going forward, players anything less than completely sold out and on board aren't going to work in his program.

There seems to be quite a bit of speculation that he and/or his family is upset about Watson coming in next year.

What does he expect.. us to not get better?

We need a true PG and Tarin doesnt fit that.

Maybe he thought he was going to eventually backup Watson and then get pushed to the 2 guard spot?

I guess i dont see it, but hey, if Tarin doesnt want to compete, maybe he is right to move on where something is handed to him?

I like Tarin and very bummed to see him leave, but as we always say: "Next man up"

“Tarin and I had talked over the last month about his future and where he fit in,” Miles said. “I believe strongly in Tarin and wanted him to stay, but I put out the most likely scenario for him and told him he had to feel good about it.”

Smith would have been in competition for playing time next season with senior-to-be Benny Parker and incoming freshman Glynn Watson from Chicago, a national Top 60 recruit.
Smith, after starting three times late in the season, had expressed disappointment in coming off the bench again in the final two games.

“I have given him a blanket release. He can go anywhere, and we’ll make calls and send video to anybody to help him out.”
Miles said the departure of Smith now and Hawkins after last season hasn’t been easy to take.
“We’ve lost some freshman guards that I thought had potential and talent,” the coach said. “Usually, we lost them out of area and they go back closer to home. I don’t know what will happen with Tarin.
“I think that’s one of the risks we run sometimes when we recruit nationwide.”
Was Smith homesick?
“He never mentioned that,” Miles said. “I don’t see that as an issue.”

I honestly don't understand how you get these kids to understand that they are going to have to compete with other players for playing time. This program isn't all about them and we aren't going to stop recruiting good players.

So he ran from competition...

That is the feeling i got.

Tarin was a good player but not a good enough PG to play strictly at that spot. He probably saw the depth chart at the 2 guard and knew he would have to compete for playing time with Webster, Petteway and Andrew White.

I hope he didnt leave because he didnt want to compete. I want guys on this team that will compete. Take BEnny Parker and David Rivers. They both saw the depth chart and yet put forward 110% effort and earned there spot. That is what i saw out of Webster too. He wanted to be at Nebraska and basically with his increase of effort earned his playing time.

I wish Tarin all the best, but this is a tough loss for a kid who showed some talent. I hope he goes to a bit of a smaller school where he can get playing time and be a leader.

If he goes to Creighton, all the nice things i said go away.
