Brion Carnes Signs with Omaha Beef

Recommended Posts

Hard to know who could have been great that wasn't because of the previous staff. Carnes, to me, is one of them.

Yea, I'm with ya. Just another guy that seemed to have the physical tools to be successful just couldn't be developed. Only thing I ever heard about Carnes was that he just wasn't grasping everything between the ears. Couldn't learn the offense. Looking back on it, who ever really did get it? On either side of the ball really? All we ever heard was players weren't executing or were "swimming in it". When all the evidence is set on a plate in front of you, you begin to realize that the coaches couldn't teach or develop.

Redshirt freshman with nice high school film and promising ability in 2010. Changed coordinators and offenses and never was part of a serious competition. Made a few nice pitches in garbage time but didn't seem to rise under Beck's system. It's too bad for him, I think Watson liked him a lot. But like so many players who show promise at one point in time, it didn't ultimately pan out for him, here or elsewhere.

No way in hell would I have traded the Taylor Martinez Show for Brion Carnes. School records up the wazzoo aren't something to sneeze at, and for whatever issues Martinez had, he was a hell of a great quarterback here. Put on one hell of a show.

But Brion Carnes was a Husker. And once a Husker, always a Husker. And I wish him the best. And I'm damned glad he's back in Nebraska playing football.

There was a time I thought I would've but I'm not sure now. Taylor did get better after seeing a QB coach and I was looking forward to his senior season. I always just wanted more consistency. The good with Taylor always seemed really good, amazing really. Then the bad seemed horrible almost all the time. The fumbles were ridiculous. Some of the interceptions were just thrown at the worst damn time.

Not saying Brion Carnes would've brought consistency to the position, but there was a time when I felt like a little bit of consistency at QB was all Nebraska needed to be a legit contender. I thought it'd be worth the try to at least find it.

Taylor was a blast to watch when he took off with that speed though, no doubt one of the fastest I've ever watched.

I can't disagree with that.

What I admire most about Taylor was his heart. He dreamt of being a major D1A quarterback. He got his shot, and like any kid out there, he accepted the nod. Some people, even people here at HuskerBoard, have impugned Taylor for everything he wasn't. I love him for what he wasn't, and even more for what he tried to be.

What's great about Taylor is, he didn't shrink from it. He was fantastic and amazing and awful. But when he was awful, he was self-aware enough to know he was awful, and he strove against nature and every instinct he had to be better. He took coaching, he gave up his Spring Break two years in a row. He was the square peg in the round hole more than anyone, and rather than being the victim of that, he was the hammer, driving that peg with more vigor than anyone I remember here.

Joe Ganz was a better fit at QB. So was Zac Taylor, Zac Lee, even Joe Dailey for crying out loud, and Dailey was the quintessential square peg.

But flashy and fun as Ganz was, tough and doughty as Zac Taylor was, fun and exuberant as Zac Lee was, I don't think any of them worked as hard to transform themselves as much as Taylor Martinez did. Nor did any of them face the scrutiny Martinez faced, nor did any of them respond to it as well as he did.

Taylor Martinez was so much what we did NOT need as a quarterback. He was everything we needed as a competitor and more, and despite the very glaring flaws in his game as a quarterback, I'm a huge fan, and so very glad he was our QB for those years. Rough as they were, they were a hell of a lot of fun, too.

Sam McKewon made a great point about the sorry state of QB affairs in his recent article looking back at the 2011 recruiting class -- which did not have a quarterback, as Jamal Turner was never seriously looked at here, and Bubba Starling departing for MLB was almost assured.

We go back to '07 (Witt), '08 (Spano), '09 (Green), '10 (Carnes), that's four years in a row of quarterbacks who basically by '11 or '12 had all left the program. I think Carnes may have stayed through 12.

Hopefully we manage to stay away from situations like that in the future. This staff fortunately seems to be serious about taking care of the position, and keeping it fortified with numbers. You just never know and you can't have the entire presence of competition come down to one guy thriving in a scheme change. And competition is everything.

I know no one cares but as a Beef Season ticket holder I'm pretty stoked about this.

This has been by far their worst season in the history of the franchise, I worry this will be their last season in existence. Which is a shame because they are the longest running indoor football team in the country. The OWH wrote a really good article on their history towards the beginning of the season, I would link it here but I've seen the big scary sticky about linking to articles, you should be able to still find in on the Beefs site though.

Up until two years ago they made the playoffs every year for 15 straight years which I think was part of the reason for their longevity.

Anyway, back to Carnes it will make a game which going in I feel like I knew was going to be a loss at least interesting to see Brion play.

This is the third QB I've seen this season, so it will be interesting to see how he stacks up.

I also really like what Cory Ross has done with their offense. He's a proud Callahan disciple and you can see it on the field. Interesting to see a West Coast indoor football offense.

I brought a notepad and sketched out plays one game for an indoor football mod I'm making of tecmo football. Every route and motion gets tied into PA, screens, route adjustments, jet sweeps...pretty brilliant

He's got some much going on each play it's a shame I don't have game tape to watch, the last QB I saw them use though was a pure runner, so I don't think Coach Ross got to run things the way he'd like.

Should be fun to see how he uses Brion.

Sorry for the wall of text.

Please link it! Just don't paste the entire article here, even in quotes. Either do one paragraph, or if you're extra safe, nothing but the link.

Cool update on Cory Ross, by the way. Weird to see him as a "Callahan Disciple", but it makes sense.

I don't think you rise to the top of career passing and rushing numbers at Nebraska by accident or simple longevity.

Not a lot of quarterbacks win 9/10 games a year with a second-rate offensive line, a bottom 50 defense and an anxiety-inducing head coach.

I'm just not seeing the quarterback who was sitting on the bench — or very many of the previous starting quarterbacks at Nebraska — who would have led the team to more wins and better numbers with the same resources.

The 2010 defense was still pretty good, that secondary was elite. I hate the shoulda/woulda/coulda but that ankle sprain derailed the offense, that kid was tougher than nails to play it out and show no emotion of injury - not a boo boo. After that I questioned some of his decision making, but he was still better than anything behind him. Also kind of wonder what '09 could have been if they let him go at it As a true frosh.
