Will New Extra-Point Rules Cause More Teams To Go For Two?

First, the new rule:

  • Extra points will be snapped from the 15 (instead of the 2), making them a 32- or 33-yard kick.
  • Two-point conversion attempts will still be snapped from the 2-yard-line.
  • Both plays will be “live,” meaning defenses can return blocks/interceptions/recovered fumbles for two points of their own.

During the past two seasons, according to Pro Football Focus, NFL place-kickers converted 97.6 percent of all kicks between 30-35 yards when lined up in the middle of the field.

To put those figures in context, let’s plug them into the 2014 season. At 97.6 percent accuracy, we would have seen 1,200 of 1,230 extra points converted. Instead of eight misses, there would have been 30.

Conservatively, the new rule should result in at an extra missed PAT a week or so. Maybe some of those will end up mattering; maybe none will.

I don't think moving the kick back without changing the line for the 2 point conversion will change much. Most team - except maybe Chip Kelly - will still kick most of the time. If they would have moved to the one-and-a-half or especially the one, I think teams would go for two more.

Perhaps if teams miss a PAT they'll be more likely to go for two the next time but I don't think it's a huge thing for now.

What's the hit rate for 32-yard field goals? Probably at least 80%, right?

The article GSG quoted said 97.6 from 30-35 yards in the middle of the field. I thought that seemed pretty high but perhaps kicking from the middle makes it that much easier than kicking from the hash.

Oops, I missed that. Yeah, that seems like it could be right. That's from the 13 to 18 yard lines, and as you say, middle of the field.

This seems like a very, very conservative change. Why not move it to the 25? A 42-yard FG is not a given and making one means the kicker actually deserves a pat on the back. A good kicker should still make most of them, but it's a real play at that point and not a near automatic formality.

Ryan Clady gone for the season. Probably the best left tackle in football is out of an already completely rebuilding offensive ine. New coach, new offensive scheme completely, and now an even less experienced offensive line. It could be a rough year as a Broncos fan. We may have missed out window for that Super Bowl win.

Randy Gregory eating In-N-Out and pizza every day to gain weight

“I live on In-N-Out, probably go to In-N-Out every day,” Gregory said in an interview with KRLD via the Dallas Morning News. “I lived on the West Coast. I’ve had Whataburger. I had that about 3 o’clock in the morning one time, I think when I first came out here to visit. Wasn’t too impressed. Any calories I put in is good, they don’t care what it is. I probably order pizza every other night. The important thing is I’m gaining weight. That’s what they wanted.”

Why can't this be me?!

Greg Hardy's suspension reduced to four games

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy had his suspension reduced from 10 games to four on appeal by arbitrator Harold Henderson, the NFL announced Friday.

The NFL initially suspended Hardy in April for what it deemed to be multiple violations of the league's personal conduct policy during an incident with a former girlfriend in the spring of 2014. The charges against Hardy were eventually dismissed after Nicole Holder refused to cooperate with the Mecklenburg (North Carolina) County district attorney's office.
