I think last year's season (win-loss record, Big 10 standings, no NCAA or NIT, general lack of performance, effort, and fire) makes a salary jump and extension an issue, or if not that, a place to start a thoughtful discussion.

Really, Miles is still in his honeymoon and is putting together the best recruiting class in Nebraska history. He has 4 top 100 players on the roster and is getting 4 start players to at visit. He is filling the arena and the Univ. is showing future recruits that he is going to be here for at least 4 years.

Per salary figures released by the school to the Journal Star upon request, Miles will make $2,000,080 annually through March 31, 2020. Miles was making $1,652,646 for the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Nebraska assistant coaches also received a salary bump, with recently hired Rashon Burno now the Huskers' highest-paid assistant at $248,000 annually.

Jim Molinari is making $244,297 after previously making $237,182, and Kenya Hunter is making $243,665 after previously making $236,568. Burno and Hunter are under contract through April 30, 2017, and Molinari is under contract through April 30, 2018.

I get it. People are upset because the season wasn't up to their expectations. I'm disappointed as well. However, not only does it send the wrong message, but we're not going to be doing our recruiting any favor if the administration doesn't at least make it look that they're all in on the current staff. They did the same thing with Pelini after some disappointing losses. It is how the process works.

 

Unlike Pelini, I think the administration really does still believe in Miles & company when they gave him the raise/extension. He'll get a couple more years to show improvement before he feels any real heat from people that matter. As I said earlier, there's nothing to see here.

I'm not upset. I just think it's interesting.

 

It keeps his contract running five years out, which is pretty standard for football and basketball despite all the people complaining when Pelini kept getting extensions. And apparently the salary number is locked at that number instead of having a yearly increase which is a little different but not a big deal.

 

I do find it a little odd that there was such a big jump. It's not like Miles really had much to negotiate on. But it seems to be in line for what we need so I'm fine with it.

Call me the eternal optimist when it comes to Miles, but I think this incoming class is going to be the real turning point. I'm glad that he's still getting full support from above, because recruiting over these next two years is going to ultimately determine his fate.

 

Resurrecting Nebraska basketball is as big of a task as living through a demo derby in a Ford Pinto. He's got his work cut out for him.
