'15, '16, '17 Ohio St. loaded; can they challenge '95 Huskers?

Recommended Posts

Lots of articles this preseason about Ohio St. and how much talent they have coming back and how many great recruits are soon to be coming in.

McKewon: In list of top Big Ten players, Ohio State is clear-cut champ

Lots of juniors and sophomores have seen extensive time and heavy contributors. Just yesterday I was watching a replay of the Ohio St. and Mich game from last season and four of their defensive touchdowns were scored by freshman. Urban Meyer knows how to score points using all of his offensive weapons.

With the Big Ten East picking up steam (new coaches, stronger teams) if Ohio St. can run the table, beating several highly ranked teams along the way including winning the four team playoff that will include top 4 teams, could they challenge '95 Nebraska as the all time greatest team?

You're putting the cart way before the horse here. Let's see them have 1 undefeated national championship season before we start having this conversation.

Why not talk about it? The pieces are there. Its just the prospect of them challenging, not necessarily saying they will.

You'd be crazy to not think they could be undefeated this year with basically EVERY piece coming back.

I'll say this, I think there were at least 5 teams last year that could have beaten 95 Florida team by 20+ points.

Oregon, Bama, FSU, OSU, TCU....and probably MSU and Baylor.

I'm sure I'll catch some flak for that, but I stand by it.

Of course they could. Problem is will they?

There's been a lot of teams that have been close to single season dominance on par with '95 Nebraska. 2013 Florida State, 2008 Oklahoma, 2004 USC, etc. However it's extremely difficult to maintain that every single saturday, and nobody else quite has yet.

They'll slip up and buy into the hype.

If there's one thing we know about college football, it's that a season never plays out as expected. Even last year's tOSU had several close calls and a loss. Everyone is remembering their last few games and assuming that's how they'll play all the time. PSU or Minn might finally get tOSU this year.

I don't see Ohio State beating a greater amount of ranked teams than 1995 Nebraska. The only team that is probably guaranteed to be ranked when Ohio State plays them is Michigan State, and whoever Ohio State plays in the CFP assuming they make it that far.

Plus with how different the "game" of college football is since 20 years ago, I don't think a comparison can be accurately made.

The game features a much deeper group of programs than 20 years ago. So by ranked teams...no, I agree. However in terms of talent, I think OSU will see better, than what 95 NU saw.

I have a feeling something will happen to tOSU in regards to the NCAA...Meyer is a scum bag and will get caught doing something illegal.

What do you base that off of? He seems like a great coach, not just x's and o's but as a person, I'd love to play for a guy like him.

Comparing talent across eras isn't compatible. Players are bigger, faster, and stronger now then they were in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.

To be the "best of all time", the comparison has to be how that team faired against its schedule that year IMO. A main reason 95 Nebraska is considered the "best of all time" is because they beat #2, #5, #7, #9 in the final AP poll by an average score of 49-18. If OSU can pull off something close to that then we can have a conversation.
