Nebraskan Wins Badwater Ultramarathon

Recommended Posts

Pete Kostelnick from Lincoln won the 135 mile Badwater race last night, in 23 hours, 27 minutes. The race starts at the lowest point in the US, Death Valley (282 ft below sea level), and finishes at the portal to Mount Whitney (8360' elevation). It used to finish at the top of Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48, but the park service no longer allows races there. Many racers get a permit to finish the traditional course. Pete's time was the 3rd fastest in the 29 year race history. Temps hit 116 in Death Valley yesterday, though racers were clear of the hottest area by mid day and "only" faced low 100s.

They used to start mid day so they were in death valley for the hottest part of the day, but the park service made them move the start to late evening. Runners had to run on the painted line to keep their shoes from melting. One runner said his crew held a sandwich out the car window for him to take, and by the time he was able to grab it, it was toasted.
