Shields, Kurkowski Named to NABC Honors Court

Recommended Posts

Nebraska basketball players Shavon Shields and Kye Kurkowski were recognized for their efforts in the classroom Thursday, as both players were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court.

The honor is presented to players who are a junior or senior academically at an institution and posted a GPA of 3.20 or better at the conclusion of the 2014-15 academic year.
This is the second straight year that Shields has been recognized by the NABC, while it is the first time that Kurkowski has been honored.
Shields was a stalwart for the Huskers in 2014-15, averaging 15.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. The forward ranked in the top 15 in the Big Ten in both categories, and ranked first or second on the team in scoring (second), rebounding (first), assists (second) and steals (second). In the classroom, he was first-team Academic All-American, becoming the first Husker men’s basketball player to be chosen for the five-member first team.
Kurkowski was a standout in the classroom during his career, as the walk-on was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He played in seven games for the Huskers in 2014-15 and completed his undergraduate program in December before beginning work on his master’s degree. In addition to his academic work, Kurkowski received the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for his efforts in Nebraska’s nationally-renown Life Skills Program.
