Camping Out: Linebackers

Recommended Posts

Rose-Ivey, Bando and Newby getting most of the first team reps. Dedrick Young, Luke Gifford and Garrett Poppen look to be the #2s so far, though Young is close to Newby. Gifford said to be looking pretty good after switching from Safety - as you may expect he handles coverages well. Might be an interesting option on passing downs.

Sam's take

Linebackers: Instead of writing about them all, we'll zero in on the five or six who seem most likely to play right now. Josh Banderas and Michael Rose-Ivey appear solid as starters, and, given the defense Nebraska plays, it won't be awkward having them be on the field at the same time. Rose-Ivey is able to use his physicality and instincts at the outside spot while Banderas is able to get on his horse and run the middle linebacker spot. The roles suit them. Opposite Rose-Ivey, Marcus Newby has had a strong camp, as has Dedrick Young. Newby's a bigger hitter; Young seems more fluid. Finally, redshirt freshman Luke Gifford, who had a "what's he going to play" quality to him when he arrived at Nebraska, seems to have found a home at outside linebacker. Walk-on Chris Weber sat out Sunday's practice, but he's in the mix, too. There are three more freshmen - Tyrin Ferguson, Mohamed Barry and Adrienne Talan - of which Ferguson is the most physically imposing, while Barry is the most natural-seeming. Ferguson may be groomed to be the next middle linebacker.

Starting to get the impression that we aren't as weak at linebacker as we thought. Sure, depth is an issue but the talent seems to be as good or better then the last few years.

I think you're right. Just breaking them down by pure talent, I think we are very well off. We might be "weak" when it comes to the experience factor, but I think the overall talent may be good enough to hide some of the inexperience issues.

I think so much of this season depends on getting bit by the injury bug in the right place. It's going to happen, but we need it to happen in places like secondary and RB. We don't have the established depth we need to take hits at the wrong spots. If we get lucky this could be a surprisingly successful season imo.

Bray said each of the linebackers can bring a different strength to the spot.

“You look at a guy like Newby and he’s really good in the box - not as good out of it - but it’s because he’s strong, powerful and has speed where he can run things down,” Bray said. “Dedrick has it where he can play either of the spots. He’s good in space and he’s big enough and strong enough to play in the box. We like that he’s versatile like that. Luke gives us coverage ability. We’re using him in nickel packages and situations where we’re going against good passing teams. There’s things he can do against a tight end that the other guys can’t. "
