Below is the version of the Husker prayer that I think is correct. I used to say "stride". But I think it was Redux (??) who convinced me that "stripes" is correct. I've heard it both ways. In fact, in the two YouTubes below you hear the players say it both ways.

Dear Lord, the battles we go through in life,

We ask for a chance that's fair

A chance to equal our stripes,

A chance to do or dare

If we should win, let it be by the code,

Faith and Honor held high

If we should lose, we'll stand by the road,

And cheer as the winners go by

Day by Day, we get better and better!

Til' we can't be beat...

WON'T BE BEAT!

btw, "Stripes" is a reference to the whipping marks left on Jesus' back. LINK

How do you equal your stripe?

It's a bit preachy, but "Stripes" is a religious thing. It's a reference to the whipping marks left on Jesus' back. LINK Jesus took on the sins of the world, and in doing so, incurred stripes (and death) to redeem us. Since he took on our sin, they are rightfully our stripes. We are supposed to be good Christians in response to Jesus taking our stripes for us and dying for us on the cross. I'm not sure that you wanted a sermon for an answer. But that's what I think it means.
