WBB: Shepard Starts New Chapter for Huskers

As the third-ranked recruit nationally in the 2015 class, the 6-foot-4 forward from Fremont could have played for some of the top-10 programs in the country. Nebraska, after a rough end to last season and losing four starters, isn’t ranked to begin the season.

Nebraska has made remarkable improvement in Yori’s 13 seasons, but Shepard probably could have gone to one of the programs that consistently have a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four, a place the Huskers have never been.
Shepard never really gave it that much consideration.
“You know, what’s really cool about Jess is that she knew from the get-go that she wanted to come here, but then she stayed committed to it,” Yori said. “You see it in all sports — especially in football — with kids that commit, and then decommit. Jess stayed true to her commitment even though people were still knocking on her door. That says a lot about the kind of person she is, and the way she was raised and the kind of family she comes from.”
Shepard committed to the Huskers in the summer of 2011. Her only other college visit, to Colorado, happened just before that.
“They’d send mail and stuff,” Shepard said of other schools recruiting her. “I’d open it, but I never called them or anything like that.”
