What can Tommy Do?

To get better? I think we can all agree that Tommy has physical gifts. Enough so that he's a 3 year starter at a historical program. I also think we can agree that most of his issues are between the ears, but what precisely can he do to change his consistency and the likelihood of favorable outcomes? Im sure it all starts in practice, but if your his coach or his dad or his friend, what advice to you give to help him build his decision making skills? And I'm not looking for things like: quit, transfer, change positions. I'm looking for real honest advice on how he can change his decision making process. Are there specific drills that can help? I feel that he's very untrusting of his team and his coaches and he tries to do too much.

The older I get the more I admire athletes who can stare adversity in the face and do what it takes to conquer and achieve. I'm really hoping he can be this story.

It's too late in the game to expect that his mechanics will fix themselves. When the game is live, all of it goes out the window. You can't undo 14-15 years of bad habits in a year and a half.

No hard feelings for the guy. Heck of a competitor but if he's gonna switch positions, TE wouldn't be a bad place to go.

I don't think it a mechanics deal - he is what he is in that department. He will always throw off his back foot and across his body, but he's got to learn not to throw into double/triple coverage . I wonder what Tommy looks like in practice, does he know the offense and that he has multiple outlets to throw, run the ball to. Several times today, the middle was wide open, yet he danced and pranced around frantically looking for a passing target when he could have easily picked up 5+ Why doesn't he tuck and run for 3,4,5 more often rather scrabble to find double covered receivers

Transfer.

To a school with a real coaching staff.

Good luck, best wishes kid.

A real coaching staff wouldn't play him. So it's a lose-lose, right?

Touche'

The current clown show staff did play him, no one in their right mind thinks that they are even average coaches.

I must not be in my right mind. Isn't Riley's overall record just slightly below .500? Doesn't that make him an about average coach?

TA is a great athlete just not a great QB, particularly as drop back pocket passer. He should be an option QB. At Nebraska under Riley, he needs to be a running back or receiver if he hopes to make the pros. He could be a great running back but its much too late to be a great passer. Riley and Langsdorf won't get any improvement from him before next season.

I don't expect them to change anything. They tried Fyfe and got burned badly so I don't expect them to experiment.

One thing that bothers me: football is basically a north-south game. Riley spends too many plays running east-west behind the line of scrimmage. That only work when you are faster than the defense or have blockers that can seal the outside. Riley should have been using the I formation for power running with some option football mixed in but no, we seem to have a derivative of the west coast offense again--- with the same results.

Not considering that he was handed the keys to a Cadillac, and promptly drove it right into the ditch.

Tommy has hit his peak. If he isn't capable of making the decision not to throw a 50/50 pass when the team is in field goal range, he never will. If he still doesn't know it's not against the rules to throw the ball out of bounds, he never will. If he still doesn't know taking a sack is better than winging the ball up in the air toward a random spot on the field, he never will. He's had 3 seasons of college football to learn those things. He is not going to learn them now.

Also, I really don't like the comparisons to Martinez. Martinez was never this bad at throwing and at any moment he could score a TD with his legs.

I think last offseason, Tommy worked hard to get into this new offense, new passing system, etc.

What he needs to do now is to fairly revolutionize his decision-making standards and clean up his footwork in a major way.

That can only come with a serious amount of buy in and effort, and will probably be helped along immensely if they can get somebody in here to push him hard for the job. It's not good to get too comfortable. Even then, some of it might be tough -- there's a lot of bad habit to erase. At the least it can get a lot better, and we can all see the potential of what he can do if he does all this.

That said, today was as frustrating as ever to watch him make some of those throws.

We need an athletic QB, not and athlete playing QB. Tommy works hard, is a leader, but too much of a gun slinger mentality, and does not have the talent to back it up.

This staff needs a better player at the position. I have said for three years, Tommy is not the answer for the past staff or this one. I want him to succeed and play well, but it just not possible it seems. He has a cannon for an arm, but his processing of the field and the receivers/defensive backs is just not there. Not to mention this loss is going to hurt him. I do not expect him to be our QB next year. They will go with youth to build what they want.

Man this is going to be a long off season I am afraid. Need to get on the bike and train, stay away a little bit more I think.
