Husker Basketball Recruitment Historically

Recommended Posts

My argument : Tim Miles has done a better job of getting talent here than any coach ever has, and we need to be patient.

I want to present some historical stats on where we've finished with basketball recruitment rankings - Rivals only shows the top 30 teams, and that isn't us, so I went to 247 - they do all teams, but only go back to 2003.

2003 - 228th

2004 - 64th

2005 - 57th

Doc Sadler hired (I think)

2006 - 73rd

2007 - 68th

2008 - 139th

2009 - 54th

2010 - 220th

2011 - 71st

Tim Miles named coach

2012 - 62nd

2013 - 65th

2014 - 88th

2015 - 33rd

2016 - 58th (currently, looking to add one more?)

Now, I don't know if this is entirely conclusive. But I'll take the consistency of Mile's recruiting any day over what we had for the 10 years previous. We're in the right direction.

It's also the context of who is he recruiting. In football terms, if we went out and signed 15 4 star OL and no QB, we would have a very highly rated recruiting class but would probably not do so well on the field.

Miles has been very good at signing players between 6-2 and 6-7 that basically all play the same outside position. And that's great. But he has ZERO inside presence and it is quite obvious in the way the team plays and "defends"

Excellent, thanks for those numbers. So far Doc had 4 years that were comparable to Tim's 4 years, but also had 2 horrible years!

Just like any sport, you have to be able to coach up what you have, that is not being done!

There is not a single year in the past 15 that even compares to last years class. How many top 100 recruits have the huskers had in the past 30 years??? 5? 10? 15? - Believe we currently have 4 or 5 on this team.

The difference between a 55 and 80 ranked class is one extra decent recruit or a couple guys that are slightly higher than average. The difference between 55 and 33 is much tougher - multiple quality players required to get in the 30's. If Miles finds one more solid player we will see the current year in the low 50's. Giving Miles the 1st and 2nd ranked classes in the past 15 years.

Coaching the players up is important, however the expectations put on our freshman are crazy. It's rare to have a freshman come in and be a star we expect this to happen with 3 of the 5 on the court - slow down and let this play out over the next 2 years.. I will say the lack of a big man is strange, however Miles has shown that he isn't going to just take a borderline reach to fill the spot. The Big will come and these younger guys will get older and be allowed to play their true position. At that time this team will find it's spot in the upper half of the Big Ten.

I think your assertion is correct.

But class ranking is a pretty poor way to compare classes in basketball. A class of two four-stars is probably ranked below a class of four three-stars. Average rating would probably be a better comparison.

I agree 100%. Due to the limitation in scholarships, rankings are skewed by the numbers of recruits each year. Its tough to be highly ranked with 2 recruits. It would be better to show the number of recruits & the average ranking.

Miles was hired in March of 2012, which means Doc had already had the class signed before he became coach. Miles brought in 2 transfers.

2013 - 4 recruits - 65th

2014 - 2 recruits - 88th, 4* transfer

2015 - 5 recruits - 33rd, 2 - 4* & 4* transfer

2016 - 2 recruits - 58th, 1 - 4 star & a high 3*

Miles & staff is doing a good job recruiting. We have more 4* players under Miles than in the last 10-12 years before him. Miles biggest issue is striking out when getting a quality big man.

No doubt the star numbers are up.. Performance on the court, not so much! Yep, all these better recruits are producing results comparable to the lowest ranked classes. Right, right, they need time to develop.. and therein lies the problem. They are not being coached up.

In the end, just like every other sport, star numbers are just that, numbers. They need to be coached up, and as of right now that is not happening!

and giving Miles that great class we are still seeing crappy play. I am not just talking about W's and L's, I am talking about crappy play! Play that is coachable! I am not in any way saying the recruits are not better. I am saying the results on the floor are not getting better. That is coaching my friend.

Do you see this kind of crappy play from the 4* freshman at teams like Kansas, Duke.. hell name a team! No you don't! Why? because of coaching!!

lol, who knew expecting clean smart basketball was having high expectations.

Take any freshman from KU or Duke or any number of top 10 schools and they would wipe the floor with our freshman!

That is the problem you talk about taking these powerhouse conferences and putting a freshman into a successful situation and they can shine. We have a situation where we are trying to take MULTIPLE freshman and expect them to play at the same level as your KU / Duke example - this is not realistic.

We start 3 juniors 2 seniors and a redshirt sophomore. Yes, we play freshman but what does that have to do with playing clean, smart basketball? You are making excuses for Miles!

What makes those schools powerhouse schools? Coaching!!!!!
