Discussion About Recruiting, Measurables and Other Misc. Topics That Don't Belong in Miller's Thread

I still don't have any issue with his size. He's 6'3 245. If he can get to 260-270, that's enough size. I don't like it when the DE's are 280+, because I would rather have fast DE's, chasing down the QB. Yes, O-linemen are getting bigger, but against the run, most DE's are asked to hold their ground and occupy blocker(s) and free up the LB's and safeties to make the tackles.

So you prefer this guy over Joey Bosa, is that what you're saying? Me, I take Joey Bosa every time. SMU had a DE a few years back, German kid, 6'6" 280, could fly, best DE I'd seen in a long time. Pretty sure he's in the pros now.

I dunno, I prefer big fast strong guys at all positions, but some fans seem to prefer smaller, slower guys. Strange.

Obviously I would prefer Joey Bosa. I agree that I would love a big, fast dude. But, to say this guy is "too small" to play DE is mis-guided. Now, his overall skill-set may not make him a great DE, but you can't just look at his size.

Who knows, maybe he'll be the next Trev Alberts. I'm just reacting to his listing @ 230, but now everybody says he's 245. Still, if I were coach, I'm looking for a DE preferably 6'5", 6'6" and at least 250 for starters. It can take some of these guys 1-2 years to put on the 20-30 lbs if need be. Joey's bro Nick is coming in @ 6'4" 255 out of the gate, 5*s. tOSU has landed several 4 and 5* DEs over the last few years.

Just imagine how good Miller could be if he was 1 inch taller and 10 pounds heavier.

...and had Bosa like genes.....

That's the main reason why one would want the bigger size, right? Seriously, the "new normal" linemen these days is ~300lb, ripped, athletic, and can run, like that Nkemdiche guy. That's the way it's going as far as I can tell--if you want to be a contender, that is. Leonard Williams, 6'5", 291, remember him?

Which DE's have given Nebraska OT's more trouble?? Speed Rushers my friend

That's what I would love to see us get back to.....guys that can just run and get after the QB

Leonard Williams is a big speed rusher. Same with Bosa. I think that's the way it's going these days, they have to be big--and fast. I'm sure if we got a guy like that, nobody would be complaining.

Corn, I get what you are saying. I think we all wouldn't be complaining about a guy who is 6'6 270 lbs and can fly all over the field. Those can be hard to come by, but it would be great if our coaches are able to recruit a guy like that.

But, for you to say that Miller isn't a good recruit because he's too small at 6'3 and 240 lbs as a high school senior is simply misguided IMO. Maybe Miller isn't a highly regarded recruit because he is considered "short" for a DE. But, let the guy get on campus and have him play some snaps before we start saying this kid isn't a good enough recruit for a DE.

My first impression was based on the listing of 6'3", 230, which is LB size. Ok, upon review, 6'3" isn't necessarily out of the ordinary, though I would prefer taller. Now, I am told, he is 245. If he can get up to 260 minimum, I can live with it, if he can play, that is.

As to the bigger, taller guys, they are out there, just being snagged by other schools. We need to get some of those guys.

Just because he has size does not mean he will fit in our system. We never even offered this guy! I will trust the coaches evaluation.

Yay Collin Miller!!! How does a thread about a kid who is coming to play for DONU turn so quickly into whatever the hell this turned into.

It rhymes with pornotraffic.

Which now that i think about it, is most likely the only traffic i wouldnt mind being stuck in ;)

^This. As for the person above criticizing his size--Why would his size be an issue? I mean, I could see if he was 6' tall or something. Or weighed 220 lbs. But he appears to have a great frame for an incoming frosh DE. CN Red mentioned above that Grant Wistrom was 6'5", 255 as a senior. Does anyone remember him as a freshman? Wistrom came to UNL skinny as a frosh. Weighed something like 225 or so. And that seemed to turn out okay for us.

I do like this kids offer sheet a bit better. I also like the size and current weight. I get the general point.

My guess is that we had offers out to better players that we missed on and as it came down to the wire our 3rd, 4th and 5th tiered kids were ranked a bit differently then Wisconsin.

In the end both kids are 3*, 5.7 kids. I'll trust the coaching staff and not get too upset.

I do think we could make some improvement in this position of need.

People need to remember that Epley evaluates these kids also and can tell if the kid will be able to put on good weight and still keep his speed and quickness. When they are here for camps and even official visits, they get looked over by the S&C department, along with the Sport Nutrition people to see if the kid has room to grow and grow properly with good weight.
