2016 Opponent Previews: Fresno State

SBNation: Fresno State football is the 2016 Mountain West's biggest wild card

I wrote in last year's preview that it makes sense when Fresno State is good. Unlike so many other Mountain West schools, you've got a lovely recruiting location, and your program has a history of solid results -- a couple of ranked finishes, seven seasons with double-digit wins, 21 bowl appearances, etc. In the time that current recruits have been alive, you've pulled some memorable upsets, and you've attended a bowl in 14 of 17 seasons.

2016 projected wins: 5.8

Projected S&P+ ranking: 94 (7 in Mountain West)

5-year recruiting ranking: 78 (3 in Mountain West)

Biggest strength: Recruiting has established a solid level of athleticism.

Biggest question mark: Do the Bulldogs have a quarterback? A running back? An offensive line? Receivers? You get the idea. The offense is in flux, to put it politely.

Biggest 2016 game: at UNLV (Oct. 1). This is the second of seven virtual tossups on the schedule, and it's the conference opener. This will set the tone for the final two months.

Summary: After two strong seasons and two poor ones, DeRuyter's second life as head coach begins. His Bulldogs have enough experience to go 8-4 and enough question marks to go 4-8. They are a MWC wild card.

Time to pull out of the nosedive.

With Derek Carr and one of college football’s top high-flying offenses, Fresno State crushed everything in its path during head coach Tim DeRuyter’s first two seasons with two Mountain West titles. Even Year Three – a total rebuilding season – ended up with an appearance in the Mountain West title game.

Now it’s the fifth season under DeRuyter and the Bulldogs are coming off a strange 3-9 campaign when nothing seemed to go right on either side of the ball – particularly on defense.

When Abilene Christian is the best win of the season, there’s a problem.
