Every year at the NFL Draft and throughout the football season, college players boast about the strength of their position groups, while programs tout their success getting players drafted in order to help with recruiting. But which teams really deserve the bragging rights when it comes to developing players and preparing them for success in the league?

Welcome to our Position U series, where CBS Sports examines where NFL talent has come from over the last decade (2006-15).

It's not simply getting players into the league that matters, though. How do those players perform once they're receiving big paychecks and playing in the NFL?

Historically NU really didn't have a lot of RB make it in the league. Right now Nebraska has about as many guys playing RB in the NFL as at any time. Rex, Ameer and Roy Helu are still playing I believe.

Hell, I'll take KickerU. One of the most underrated positions on the field. If you got a good one, your always guaranteed points of some kind. Look at the history of the game. So many games won and lost by kickers!

I looked it up because I also found it hard to believe. But it appears to be true.

 

Roger Craig and Ahman Green were the only Husker standouts from '67 to '97, but the list is determined by # of NFL draft picks, not the quality of their NFL careers.

 

I remember Cory Schlesinger and Andre Franklin had decent NFL careers as fullbacks. Correll Buckhalter was a coulda been. Brandon Jackson had a moment or two. But a lot of great Husker RBs actually didn't "make it" in the league, they just managed to get drafted.

 

And while we think our reputation as RB U has taken a hit, I'd agree that having Helu, Burkhead and Ameer all looking viable at the same time is likely the best concentration of RB talent we've ever had in the NFL.

 

I think Janovich will get a few looks even if he doesn't get drafted.

One major reason Nebraska might well be "Kicker and Punter U" is that the Huskers, unlike many programs, have traditionally given scholarships to punters and kickers and sometimes multiple ones in the same season. This is contrary to many schools who get walk ons to punt, kick, hold, etc.

 

I personally believe the most important scholarships are the following, in order of importance:

1 - 2. Quarterback

3. Punter

4. Field goal kicker

5. Kick off kicker

6. Punt returns

7-9. RB

10-17 OL

18-24. DL

25-29. LB

30-34 Secondary

35-42 Receivers

Repeat as necessary until 85 are used up.
