The person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter — someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie; it was real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.

 

Disrespect invites disrespect; violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.

Except for the problem of possibly having their rights taken away if they are Muslims, for example.

Diversity is everything to me. We have empowered people who at best scorn the idea of affirming it, and at worst are outright hostile to a multicultural vision of America. I thought it was a beautiful speech on those terms.

I guess I am not in the same mind frame that the Gov't is going to be rounding up legal, documented, immigrants and shipping them back to their originating country. Does that make me naive?

 

Though I wouldn't mind more football and UFC over some of the crap Hollywood has put out as of late.
