Scratchtown
What are everyone's thoughts on the 16 team playoffs in Class C. I have mixed emotions because a team like Pierce in 2016 due to a very tough schedule is already eliminated from the playoffs. There is no way they will make the playoffs even if they win out. Kids know that too, and the thoughts creep into the minds of the players like "Is it Basketball/Wrestling season yet?" Feel bad for programs that might work their way back through their schedule but don't get rewarded for it. Gothenburg one year was 6-3 and made the finals. 1 Quote Link to comment
commando
what other schools are in their district that they are already out? Quote Link to comment
Scratchtown
Norfolk Catholic and O'neill look to be the ones that will be the head of that district. Otherwise it's Wayne, West Point and Madison Quote Link to comment
Scratchtown
Ok I guess if Pierce won out they would be district champs so they would be in. Quote Link to comment
Mavric
Yeah, they're not out. I think they kind of got the shaft last year. Probably not a good answer as it's just kind a fluke in the scheduling. Although if they lose five games (with NC and O'Neill) I don't think they'll have much argument. They got blown out one game already and lost a second by double-digits so it's not the same as if they were losing nail-biters all the way. Quote Link to comment
Scratchtown
Mav, have you heard about Boone Central and how many kids are quitting up there? Hudson isn't going to last very long if he can't get kids to stay out for football. That program didn't put a turf field in for kids to be doing nothingI've heard upwards of 30+ kids have quit the team this year since week 1 Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
For the most part, I'm fine with the 16 team playoff. If I remember right, isn't that what allowed for a 9 game season? That gives more kids more games to play which is good. The bad situation with the old system is that we had teams getting into the playoffs with something like 2 wins because that's how the points worked out and then getting blown out first round. Meanwhile, teams with more wins didn't make it. As for kids starting to think about basketball and wrestling. Heck, a heck of a lot of kids teams are eliminated long before the play offs anyway. That change doesn't affect that many kids in that way. Wow....I hadn't heard that about Boone Central. Quote Link to comment

If that's the case, it's an easy fix. If it has to do with this playoff deal you've brought up....well that's just crazy. If class C HS kids are playoffs or bust mentality, they've got bigger problems with the youth than not being able to field a team. 1 Quote Link to comment

Ashland has 41 kids on the team for varsity/jv/and c team. and 1 of those is not expected to play this year after a car accident 2 weeks before the season started. Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
Wow.....I now see that Boone Central lost last night to Norfolk Catholic 0-41. NC is only 2-2 on the season themselves. Quote Link to comment
Stumpy1
Boone Central isn't the only school to have issues. Fillmore Central only had 20 kids going out to start the season. The coach had to beg kids to go out for football. Pierce is a pretty young team from the sounds of it. Wilber-Clatonia is the juggernaut in C-2 this year. Having a hard time seeing anyone give them a challenge. Quote Link to comment
huKSer
Been teaching for many years. It seems that the kids just are not as motivated to do more extra curricular activities - not just sports. Back in 71 at a Class A HS I was on one of the four teams in HS - that's four freshman teams. There were four other teams for So - Sr classes Quote Link to comment
Scratchtown
District 4 in class C2 is absolutely fascinating. It's possible that Battle Creek, Stanton, Norfolk Lutheran, and Crofton could all beat each other up and ALL finish 6-3. Thats with Hartington CC finishing 9-0. If that were to happen. A lot of first round upsets could take place assuming all 4 of those would have enough power points to get into the playoffs. Either way. I doubt that it happens. So some VERY VERY good football teams will be staying home because of how tough a district is. Quote Link to comment
