Husker Opponents Stastistical Rankings

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be fun to check out the current stats of the teams on our schedule. Some have said that the Oregon win has lost its lustre already. 3 or 4 games isn't a large sample size, but it should be interesting anyway:

(I'm not going to cherry-pick stats that further a narrative, but I'm also not going to look at every stat)

First up, Total Offense

Rank / Team / YPG / vs Nebraska

10 Ohio State

12 Oregon / 536 / 482

16 Indiana

26 Purdue

30 Nebraska / 485

45 Maryland

64 Minnesota

75 Wisconsin

79 Wyoming / 398 / 320

92 Illinois

98 Fresno State / 364 / 274

101 Iowa

105 Northwestern / 348 / 388

It's interesting looking at the numbers. One thing that really eschews things is that with 4 of those teams, we are 25% of the data base against them while being 0% for the other.

Take Total defense. All four of our opponents so far are at the very bottom. Is that because they played us?

I was wondering that too. I think that we have been a major contributor to Northwestern's low defensive ranking. Our offense seems to become more and more productive every week. With Fresno and Wyoming, I think they are just really bad on defense. With Oregon, we took them out of their game with ball control. They always are ranked low on defensive yards because of the large number of plays in the game.

Our next opponent is the opposite of Northwestern on defense. Northwestern allows yards but not scores, limiting big plays. Illinois is much better on limiting yards, but not scores. They might be more susceptible to the "big play". As Riley has already mentioned.

Here are a few "cherry picked" stats. These are the stats we are in the top-20:

Interceptions: #4

Passes had intercepted: #6

Turnover Margin: #8

Pass yds per completion: #12

Sacks allowed: #14

Time of Possession: #17

Red Zone Defense: #18

Pass Eff. Defense: #19

Tackles For Loss Allowed:#20

These offensive stats point to an efficient offense that moves the chains, IMO.

Tommy's mobility helps with the TFL and sack numbers, too.

I can't pin down our defensive identity. we are way more balanced, I guess.
