Warrior10
Gerry made 2nd/3rd team (media/coaches). No other huskers made a team. Bando, Maurice, Dzuris, CJones made honorable mention. Imo, not good. cm husker
As is the norm, sort of like the Heisman, these recognition tend to reflect team success as much as individual ability or performance. Do well as a unit and your guys get a lot of attention and honors. Look no further than Gerry, who, in one fewer games: - had more tackles than any DB honored above him (7th among DBs and 28th in overall in conference) - finished tied for 5th in the conference with 4 interceptions (1st had 6 interceptions) - finished tied for 8th in the conference in passes defended (4th among those who were named to a team) I can kind of see him finishing on the 2nd team for both, but 3rd team is odd. If NU wins 10+ games, he's at least a unanimous 2nd teamer and probably squeezes in on at least one first team. Caught my eye, but Kieron Williams, who was tied for 2nd in the conference for interceptions doesn't even get HM? That's odd. http://www.cfbstats.com/2016/leader/827/player/split01/category19/sort01.html Here's the link to the lists: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/big10/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2016-17/misc_non_event/FBTuesAllB1G.pdf Rough Count Breakdown of Coaches Team by Program (excludes specialists): OSU - 10 Mich - 10 Wisc - 10 PSU - 8 Neb - 5 Iowa - 5 Ind - 5 Minn - 4 MSU - 4 NWU - 4 Illinois - 3 Purd - 3 (only HM) Unanimous First Team: Charlton from UM Lewis from OSU Peppers from UM McMillan from OSU Watt from Wisconsin King from Iowa Lewis from Michigan Hooker from OSU Biggest Disparity: 1st team media DLman from Illinois is only HM under coaches Quote Link to comment
lo country
Im surprised Gerry is that low. Truly. If a direct reflection of talent, we were lucky to win 9........ 1 Quote Link to comment
alwayshusking
That's fair. Gerry is the only Husker I'd put in those top 3 teams. Hopefully we can get some more difference makers out there in the coming years. Quote Link to comment

cm husker
Im surprised Gerry is that low. Truly. If a direct reflection of talent, we were lucky to win 9........ Appears to be pretty inline with what we've seen historically from the defense (per the coaches' lists): 2015 - 3 (note, another example of bad team results meaning fewer individual awards) 2014 - 5 2013 - 4 2012 - 6 2011 - 3 2010 - 9 (top defense in conference) 2009 - 9 (top defense in conference) 2008 - 4 (all HM, except Suh who was 2nd team - again, an example of unit performance dictating the individual awards) 2007 - 3 (all HM) 2006 - 7 2005 - 6 2004 - 4 2003 - 8 (another example of a well regarded defensive unit being rewarded with individual honors) Unfortunately, for the year 2002, the site I'm using doesn't capture third team or honorable mentions so number list those honored on 1st or 2nd teams: 2002 - 0 but at least 1 honorable mention (Barrett RuuD) (again, poor year equals few individual awards, even though members of that defensive roster, including Demorrio Williams and Barrett Ruud, would go onto garner several impressive awards the following year) 2001 - 4 (HM may not have been listed - it's unclear) HM is listed before 2001: 2000 - 4 (only 1 first or second teamer, which is surprisingly few considering the results that team had, but an indication of how dynamics change when conferences grow - by the way, who is Troy Watchorn? one of only two defenders named to an all conference team that year, he was a former walkon) 1999 - 6 1998 - 5 (didn't realize Foreman was only HM among the coaches - that's crazy) 1997 - 9 1996 - 10 Big 8 Conference Years 1995 - 9 1994 - 9 1993 - 7 1992 - 6 1991 - 11 (appears to have not had a "third team" at that time; only 3 of the 11 were on the 1st or 2nd team) 1990 - 5 (site I have does not distinguish between teams or who awarded them, i.e., coaches or AP, so probably fewer if just looking at coaches) 1989 - 10 1988 - 9 1987 - 8 (this is from AP because coaches did not name a team before then apparently) 1 Quote Link to comment

Honors follow success. Not the other way around. Quote Link to comment

cm husker
Difference makers are already there. Can you prove this? What sort of proof are you asking for among the returning players? Star rankings? We have well regarded recruits already on the depth chart. Stats? How about, for example, Kieron Williams being among the top of the conference in interceptions. NFL potential? Chris Jones has it. Young and Kalu have great potential. No one thought Barrett Ruud or D. Williams were much of playmakers before great coaching got a hold of them. Same with Suh, for that matter. Landlord
So in other words, not really. Just an opinion craftily built towards giving all players carte blanche protection from disapproval. 4 Quote Link to comment
