huKSer
Just got a new deck installed (finally, contacted in June) Its a covered deck so most of it is protected. To cut some cost I am finishing it. What should I do? Sealant? Water repellent? I'm in KC so it is weather is cold - do I wait until spring and warmer weather? If I wait I probably will need to power wash it due to dog tracking mud on it. Do you have any suggestions? Quote Link to comment

NUance
It sort of depends on what kind of material it's made from. But I guess if you talked to the guy he told you how to finish it. Quote Link to comment
MLB 51
You should have used composite decking. It's a money saver in the long run. Quote Link to comment

When this deck needs replaced I will do it with composite since I will only be buying the actual deck and not the supports or the roof. 1 Quote Link to comment

Thing is, you save money on paint and sealant every year. You'll have to treat that deck at least three times a year. But, I understand budget restrictions. Quote Link to comment
ColoradoHusk
You should have used composite decking. It's a money saver in the long run. We put a new deck on our house last summer. We went composite. So happy we went that direction. It's only a 10 by 16 foot deck so It wasn't that much more of an initial cost. 1 Quote Link to comment
CornHOLIO
I've never seen a deck made out of that composite stuff in captivity...Does it get hot in direct sunlight? Any traction issues when wet or if your dog is trying to grow her claws out? I think it would be like trying to get used to polyester pants after you've worn cotton/denim all your life. Composite decking does get really hot in direct sunlight. Our deck faces the east, so it's in the shade in the afternoon/evening when we use it the most. Quote Link to comment
