How long until Miles is on the hot seat

Nebraska has invested a lot of money into its basketball program and basically we have the same product on the court. There were times tonight that we ran no offense and everybody is standing around watching one guy dribble around and shoot. We play fairly tough defense but that doesn't excite recruits we need to get a guy in here that can develop scorers cause we will never win unless we can get more then two guys that are capable of scoring. I know there is a big time recruit out of Omaha this year that I'm sure we have zero chance at landing. It's frusrtating when we can't even keep,any of the state best talent.

If we don't win 10 games I would think he would be gone. He needs to recruit bigger guards/forwards, it seems we may be heading that way with Horne and Roby but we need a bigger sg to replace Tai. I don't know what it will take to make Nebraska good at bball, but it will take some time. We have a lot of young talent but they will eventually grow up. Not the most talented team we have ever had, if Miles can't get it done who do you think can get it done?

I will give Miles credit...he has done EVERYTHING right.

 

1. Played up the part of the nerdy coach perfectly

2. Makes lame jokes that the fans love

3. Is very nice to the media

Now...he made a great move by keeping (or getting) CU on the schedule and now he added KU...here me out, that is a smart move because clearly no one expects that KU game to be a win. So if they get blown out, not a huge deal, if the play close, then things are looking "good" and if they win...well then he is a hero.

 

Lucky for him the Big Ten is down this year and they can probably grab 6-8 wins in conference.

Here's the thing. I'm not expecting any miracles with Nebraska basketball. I think we would all agre that it's not too much to ask to have a winning record every year and make the big dance at least every other year. But when we consistently score in the 50's-60's it's more the style of play. Who's the right guy for the job. I don't know. But you look at programs that are far inferior to us as for as facilities and you just have to scratch your head when it comes to getting big time players that we can't land any. We had the kid that transferred from Kansas well that didn't work out either.

Was going to post something similar, plus the fact that it's downright embarrassing shelling out ~$20M for new facilities and not having jack or s*** to show for it.

 

Frankly, there are programs who have done more with less and have come from worse depths than where our team is at currently. If Miles can't get back to the NCAA Tournament, I'd dare say he's gone, and hopefully Eichorst actually interviews more than one coach this time if he is replacing Miles.

I'd say you need to give Miles until this year's Sophomores and nucleus of this team are Juniors or Seniors. If we haven't made the big dance by the time they are Seniors then it might be time to look elsewhere. Don't forget he took us to the tourney in 2013 and our last appearance before that was what 20 years?

 

Let's not be a "typical" Husker fan and think about firing our coach as soon as things get a little difficult. He has brought in talent that Sadler, or Collier wouldn't even be able to touch. Yeah it gets old losing to Creighton but remember they are rated the #10 team in the country for a reason.

Although I haven't been to a game since Moe Iba's day (maybe one or two since that time), I just wonder why any serious basketball fan would expect Nebraska to do anything other than be Nebraska when it comes to men's college BB. Nebraska has NEVER won a championship in BB and won't. Frankly, I thought it was kind of silly to build that high dollar arena, ostensibly for "Nebrasketball", I believe, although I am sure the city of Lincoln has other uses for the facility besides a nice place to watch the renowned BB teams that opponents bring to town.

 

NU has tried many times to change coaches and several times to keep them under the theory that somehow lightning will magically strike or that 'give him some time to build something' will finally work out. Even a new arena has not made much difference, if any. After only a few seasons, the howling has begun to yet again fire and hire. Many on this board are sounding quite similar on the football field too. Nebraska was not always good in football but certainly fans reasonably expect to put a top notch product out there every fall. Men's basketball is a completely different endeavor.

I would suggest, that like in football, if NU is to truly get to the Big Ten championship and or even a sweet sixteen caliber BB team, they will have to make the biggest 'splash' coaching hire in the past decade. Your going to need someone almost Michael Jordon (ish) in stature to lift the program up that much. Nebraska and the 500 mile radius produces maybe 3 or 4 serious D1 recruits and your not stealing them away from the KUs and the rest of the elites absent a super magnetic coach the likes of which has never considered Nebraska for a career 'home'.

Moe Iba was a close to a big name coach as we've ever hired, I would say, and his slow down style (which kept us in the games against almost all comers btw).

We should have tried to hire Bobby Knight when Indiana fired him. That was maybe the only real opportunity to hire someone with the gravitas to raise the dead. LOL But he was too much like Bo Pelini in persona.

With our facilities and recent (last 5 years) desire to pump massive funds into the program, i think his seat is hot. it was hot last year. It's time for results. And you can say what you want about the year two run and how they just "got hot". Getting hot or not, you cant do that with a group of players, have one of the best seasons in the programs history, return literally everyone, and lay a complete rotten egg the next year. And then another 2 years down the road, have that 1 season being a total outlier. At some point results have to be made.

 

Now, one thing he's done for sure is upgrade the talent. 3 years ago, that game last night that started out 18-4, woulda been a 30 point game rather quickly. LOL. It was. (see creighton game 2013). But this team has the talent now to that they overcame that and somehow or other, while shooting under 30 percent, less than 10percent through the first 8 minutes, to find themselves down 1 at half. i think our upgraded talent will make this prgram much more desireable in the eyes of coaches should this year go south again and we go a different direction.

 

It's about the same way i feel abotu the football program. if Riley doesnt win enough, at the very least he'll repair the toxicity that was prevelant with the fanbase to the players, between the program and admin and so on, and upgrade the talent level on the team and stabilize a very shaky roster situation. It'll be a much more intriguing job a couple more years down the road.

5 years in and it's the same old song and dance. Unless this team somehow puts it together and can make a run for an NCAA bid, Tim needs to go.

 

He's had more resources than any other NU coach, yet the product is still the same.

Miles has had more than enough time to build this program. It's time to move on, barring a miracle finish to this season.
